Backwards Switzerland

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to share my opinion about Switzerland. I find it a backwards place with lousy service. For everything you have to pay a lot of money and in return you don't get much. The stores have close to non-existent opening hours and the assortment of goods comes down to the expensive or the cheap choice (i.e either M-Budget or the brand). Stores employees still touch your meat and cheese without gloves, a nurse took my blood for testing without gloves, there are different numbers for the emergency services, food choices generally boil down to Kebab, Italian, random Swiss restaurant or a riduculously overprized asian cuisine...I could go on about my dislikes of Switzerland, but the one thing that bothers me the most, are the people. Swiss people have the urge to cast their personal opinion when their're not part of the conversation to begin with, I work for a big Swiss company and racist or sexist jokes are an almost daily occurence, and the worst part is, they don't even do it on purpose, they are just like that...simply ingorant.
What are you feelings of Switzerland?

My feelings of Switzerland...

Beautiful Mountains and lakes, Great trains, bike tracks, safe streets, not having needed to lock my car since I arrived, well situated for visiting rest of Europe, being able to get billed for services instead of having to pay straight away, EF forum, good food, friendly service (for the most part) and a generally better quality of life.

Hmm, checking your profile shows that your nationality is "Good question", but that you have German and Italian as native languages, a trait that's not at all uncommon amongst the Swiss themselves.

So the question that I have is, are you actually a Swiss person who's joined an English speaking forum in Switzerland for the sole purpose of complaining about life in Switzerland?

Welcome to the forum by the way, and merry Christmas

My god Victor Meldrew has arrived.

My feelings intitially would be your an 4rse, but after re-reading I upgraded you to tw4t.

Glad to see it's just the commercial aspect you highlight, and ignore the safety and beauty of the country and the enjoyment to be had in the mountains.

I think that the nice salary you undoubtably get does not make up for your gossemer skin, shallow commercial lifestyle, your delicate palate, or the many other sensitivities you seems to have. All I can suggest is go to France and then you'll think Switzerland is a pricey nervana

Whose going to start the pole on the OP's nationally? I'd go for lets see.... American (sorry to the other USEFer's)

Re: Backwards Switzerland

Indeed an impressive first post, although I must admit that I can see where s/he is coming from a little.

I certainly remember when I first came here years ago I had similar feelings about certain things. I remember that one of my colleagues (years ago) told me to "put up of shut up" as ultimately I am a guest in this country.

Certainly, having been here a while now, my views have changed a lot... (or maybe I just grew up ), so while some of the above may still be true (e.g. I do believe there is a base racism amongst military authorities, i.e. police and border police) there are just SOOOOO many positives, I don't think I could see myself living anywhere else for now. And those positives are in comparison to other places where I have lived as well as the negatives of being in CH.

Merry Christmas

Sounds like it. Probably an SVP member who's trying to provoke a critical discussion of all things Swiss, to use in evidence that all immigrants are miserable gits.

Let's take each point:

The stores have close to non-existent opening hours
Where I live, there are shops within walking distance that are open 6am until 10pm every day. Often the stuff is the same price, or only a little more than the main supermarkets.

and the assortment of goods comes down to the expensive or the cheap choice (i.e either M-Budget or the brand). Even the cheap is usually reasonable quality. And if you shop around you can find what you want. There's plenty of ethnic food shops around as well.

Stores employees still touch your meat and cheese without gloves, I've never seen this in any of the Swiss supermarkets I frequent - I suggest you shop somewhere else. Anyway - who can afford meat?

a nurse took my blood for testing without gloves, AIUI, the gloves are to protect the nurse, not you. Though I've had loads of blood taken from me, far more than an armful, and they've always worn gloves.

there are different numbers for the emergency services
, if in doubt, call the police. Do you have difficulty remember different three digit numbers? Why not program them into your mobile phone?

food choices generally boil down to Kebab, Italian, random Swiss restaurant or a riduculously overprized asian cuisine... Depends where you go. There's a nice chinese takeway opposite Novartis Campus in Basel very reasonable. OK, not much help for you in Olten. You can certainly get the ingredients to cook your own (in the aforementioned Ethnic shops, which will be far more authentic and better tasting than the westernised pap you find in most asian restaurants ).

Swiss people have the urge to cast their personal opinion when their're not part of the conversation to begin with, I've never encountered that.

racist or sexist jokes are an almost daily occurence, or that.

Obviously, the persistent fog in Olten is getting you down. Why not move somewhere else?

Re: Backwards Switzerland

My feelings about Switzerland? It is a country with rights (and duties) as in any other democratic countries.
You have (isn’t this wonderful) the right to travel around and even to leave the country. Aren’t you grateful that you are not forced to stay?

Opposite to yours actually.

The swiss have their own culture and attitudes as do all other nationalities. If you are a guest then you always have the option to move on.

I have to say though i am sometimes amazed that for all the complaining and hate (and i mean hate literally) that i have heard regarding switzerland from people, its amazing how many people from all walks of life and nationalities still want to come and live here.

My money is on multiple personality disorder. Two are French and Italian. the dominant one for the post was German. They can all speak English.
