Re: Wednesday [1.2.2012] is Switzerland's Siren test day - do not get scared ;-)

Siren test

The annual siren test takes place in Switzerland on the first Wednesday of February. It is organised by the Federal Office for Civil Protection (FOCP) in cooperation with the cantons, communes and dam operators. At this time, not only general alert sirens but also water alert sirens are tested to see if they are in working order. People are given advance notice about the siren test on television broadcasts as well as in the newspapers. The siren tests do not require the population to take any special measures.

Wed 6th February 2013 - It takes place between 1.30pm and 3pm.

<cunning plan>

Wouldn't a really clever attacker design their strike to take place between 1:30-3pm on 6 February, knowing that no one would heed the warnings?

Yes, here in Zurich 8048 as well. But it did not really sound well. More like the alien communication in "war of the worlds" than a proper WW2 air raid alarm...

Who, on EF knows from experience what a proper WW2 air raid alarm sounds like?

Lab report: Funny how the dog barks when the doorbell rings, cowers during fireworks and sometimes howls along with ambulance or fire truck sirens, but cannot be bothered with The Siren. It's a Labrador.

Aha. thanks for the warning. I saw it after I had jumped up shrieking in the middle of my German class. Funnily enough even the teacher (Swiss) did not know what it was

I think there are not many people on EF who are above 80, but THIS thing here shows

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...SNkupDTs4&NR=1

the sounds of a genuine Siemens siren. Mum, when she was working Ermatingen/Thurgau often could here this type of siren, when nearby Konstanz was attacked by Allied bomber squadrons

Strangely enough, when her own home town Schaffhausen was bombarded, she had been working in Zürich just beside Paradeplatz, and only heard the news when there was a loudspeaker "order" ""Frölein S... zur Chefin ... Frölein S... zur Chefin " and she then was ordered to take a seat and to learn "Frölein S..., es tuet mer leid, aber Iri Heimatschtadt isch hütemorge bombardiert worde".

Whenever I of course then was "MINUS 6 years" at that time, I have heard everything about and around it that I know almost as many details as if I had been present which is strange as well

This photo

http://schaffhausen-nostalgie-foto.c...-,index,0.html

shows almost exactly the sight my Grandmum had from home. To the right of the picture you see the small forest which separates (at least DID separate) the Breite-quarter from Neuhausen from where Grand-Dad sped home early afternoon. Amazingly, the many industries of the area were not attacked in any way. When he participated in the managing the evacuation of the personnel of the Tonwarenfabrik Schaffhausen, his only fear was that a third wave might use firebombs against the Neuhausen factories which could have put the forest into fire into which he had lead more than 100 people. But nothing thelike happened

But no news got out of Schaffhausen, and so when Mum was on her way home (via German territory) in early evening 6pm to 8pm, the train stopped a dozen times, as nobody knew what was still existing, until they arrived at the badly damaged but still functioning rail-station. The roads up the hill to the Breite had been damaged and the church totally destroyed, but above the hill things were in perfect order. The next two days, Mum was ordered two PAID days off by her boss, and learnt that about two of her schoolfriend (one man and one woman) had lost their lifes and quite a number arms and/or legs. The Steigkirche for example, only looking damaged on the photos of the Schaffhauser Nachrichten, was structurally destroyed and had to be broken up and be replaced by the beautiful "Neue" Steigkirche of today.

Harry S. Truman financed the repairs of Schaffhausen so that after 1950, almost no damage was visible.

The sirens are clearly louder in the Glattbrugg area than in the Zürich-2 (Enge+Wollishofen) area. Possibly due to the close-by airport

Only people who are above 80 can know about such things first hand.

Harry T. was not a mason and did not arrive to work himself, but he upon a visit by SH president Walter Bringolf signed the needed papers. Not hearsay is that inhabitants of Schaffhausen even could bill damages of their houses just thought to have been due to the overflying of US bombers. Granddad issued his "claim" in English, so that it had not to be translated and got some nice bank-transfers very swiftly. He did not expect Mr Truman to be among the masons

But, what is on pic 7 ?
