Re: Tomorrow is Switzerland's Siren test day - do not get scared ;-)

...but what would we do if there was actually a disaster at the same time the sirens are tested?

I'd love the irony of the situation. I'd grab some popcorn, sit down and enjoy the show.

I grew up in an area where sirens were used quite often for natural disasters (tornados and the like). If there was a chance of an actual tornado during the weekly test at Saturday noon or the chance for panic because it was overcast or something, they would simply postpone or cancel the alarm. I have a feeling they would do something like that here as well if there was huge amounts of rain or something like that.

Was reading in the link posted above about why the sirens are now used...

"In 2008, residents in the small town of Adliswil near Zurich were alerted, again in the evening, to the fact that their water had become polluted and should be boiled before drinking. The water alarm for dams has never been used."

I don't remember hearing about this! Knowing my ability to not understand swiss german over the radio I am now worried that the many reasons the siren may be sounded would miss me completely!
My husband used to travel rather often. About a year after we moved here he was away and it was a dark rainy Saturday evening. And the sirens started to sound. I barely knew my neighbors and had no idea about the radio.

Fortunately I knew about teletext. Who informed me that the local siren had been hit by lightening which set it off.

I don't remember hearing any sirens when the water got contaminated in 2005 from the heavy rain, but maybe I just missed it. We certainly got plenty of notice (neighbors that we knew better, letter posted in the main entryway, etc.).

Disasters are prohibited at that time ! Unless they "integrate" into the exercise

I've lived here for five years and have yet to hear these sirens. I feel like I'm missing out

It was fantastic! For a few seconds, the constant siren noise in my head was gone.

God bless destructive interference

Hrm, sounds like it could be!

Just in case you're not just yanking my chain...

I heard the emergency sirens going off just then. As I believe they test them the first Wednesday of every month, I figured that's what I was hearing.

Sirene Testing Wednesday lunchtime!

On Wednesday 2nd February around 1 pm the Swiss national warning system will be tested. The sirene alarm warnings will sound their various "melodies"

You do not need to take any action, but maybe warn the family as it is earily similar to the air raid sirenes during the war. If in doubt you should listen to Swiss national radio for instructions.

In Berne 2005 & 2007 they were operated to warn people the river Aare had reached a dangerous level, and the public were evacuated from the lower part of the city.

Be careful what you advise - if I were Dr. Death, and wanted to claim this land as my own, I would choose this exact time to send in my bombers (or I'd have to wait another bloody year).

You have only been here a few weeks: I think they test them 4 times each year.
