Me too! I thought it was nuclear war or something, looked out of my window and everyone was walking around very normally. Mystery solved.

Isn't there one in your basement?! I was amazed when I found mine, looks like something out of the Blair Witch Project

Does anyone know what the siren is officially for by the way...apart from the end of the world or that someone found the gold??
Our house was built in 1587- where is the bunker?

Not only the sirens went off but also they managed to trigger multiple discussions about WWII and Swiss bomb shelters. It was interesting to hear some of those long forgotten stories.

I have the dubious pleasure of being in the zivilschutz (dad's army) and actually took part today. We were split into groups of two and each group manned a siren across the gemeinde (volketswil). We were given cleaning equipment and first had to clean the compressor tanks, the control box, and then sweep out the room itself. So far so good. Next, coffee for 30 mins in the dorfbeiz next door. Then we were collected and went for lunch. For an hour ! Then back out into the village for another 30minute coffee - I kid you not. At 13.30 it's finally time to play - first the Kantonspolizei get to set the alarm off centrally. We monitor for warning lights on the panel and check that the air pressure recovers in the compressor tanks. Then the zivilschutz get to set the alarm off from the main command post. Finally - at 13:58 it was our turn and we scared the living sh1te out of Gutenswil one last time.

Thought you might like to hear the secrets of the siren test !

Thank you that was most interesting.

I now have a mental picture of what goes on there ...... And why the gaps between the siren blasts.

I was wanting to phone my sister in SA to let her hear the Great Swiss Siren Test ..... but the siren ended .... and then it began again ...... stopped as I decided to phone ....... made myself a cuppa ... and the darn thing started again ..! Ahh well ... next year, now that I know it goes off every few minutes.

Just think .... anyone wanting to nuke CH.. just has to have the date of the siren test and everyone will be NOT in their bunker!

what is a "Box office" really !

but now, for 2011, Geneva has become, what the Genevans always wanted to be, the "working Capital of the Republic"

Air raid sirens [in January 2012!]

Today, at the stroke of noon, I could hear air raid sirens in Basel. I was under the impression that these were tested on the first Wednesday of February, not of January.

Should I be hiding under my desk and preparing for the worst?
