Why don't the Swiss like laughing at themselves?

I mean, its a comical little nation, full of Clocks and watches and chocolate and cheese full of holes, and super efficient trains and clean and tidy countryside, and banks and insurance companies that have been bailed out like all the others, and loads of foriegners who they're obviously all fascinated with, there's so much to laugh and joke about, except they don't seem to find it funny. Even Germans have learnt to laugh at themselves, honestly, I know quite a few who do. We might have had to beat them up a bit before they got the joke, but we got there in the end and we're all friends now. It seems, however, that the Swiss aren't that self depreciating, and I'd like to know why.

I'm not complaining, but there it is.
(for a bonus point tell me who I'm quoting)

Do you really think it is just the Swiss?
I'm not trying to bring other races into this! But.. seems unfair to single one out.. when I'm not sure theyre the only one..

Not sure the Swiss are a race as such, more of a nation of races, or cantons.

Well, the Brits and the Irish can. And so can the Italians, and the French as well to a certain extent (perhaps not the parisians). The Spanish and the Portuguese do (although not all), and even the Germans can now, in fact I've been very impressed with some of my Germans friends humour. I hope they don't become as ruthlkessly efficient at jokes as everything else, or the Brits and the Irish will be out of a job. Some yanks can, although again, not all. The Dutch certainly can. The Belgians are good for a joke. I could go on...

Of course, perhaps I just don't know enough Swiss. But I do try. And if the ones on this Forum are anything to go by...well, perhaps they just don't want to know me. I've tried, honest I have. Perhaps they think I'll just extract the micheal. They're probably right, if they know what I mean..

Did you get Hsiang's permission to post the PM publicly?

If not this is somewhat against forum etiquette . . .

er, well, he's told me he doesn't mind, but it was his fault, he stopped me replying to him via PM

Anyway, nothing private was said, and he was trying to give everyone an English lesson, or something, so I...

Sounds as if you did/do not read Tages Anzeiger and 20Minuten with the many jokes done daily about such aspects. Sounds as if you never listened to the jokes done in bars/pubs and cafés also about such aspects.

Re: Why don't the Swiss like laughing at themselves?

Actually, I don't believe that the OP's question is correct anyway. If you consider Emil Steinberger as one of Switzerland's most popular comedians, then the Swiss do indeed enjoy laughing at themselves. Steinberger's sketches are almost always poking fun at the Swiss themselves, and I believe that by now, most Swiss actually realise this.

While Swiss, Germans and French are not really funny nations. For funny people, rather go to Italy, or to the Maghreb or to Lebanon and Syria.

Er, you're right, partly because I probably wouldn't understand them, not speaking them lingo, but mostly because I don't go to those bars, having not got the money, hence being on here instead.

Thank goodness that, by now, most Swiss realise this. So they didn't until recently eh...thank goodness they are able to laugh at themselves now.

Pity they don't like anyone else doing it.

Rereading my post I don't see a time frame on it...whether it was recently or 10 or 15 years ago is besides the point.

As for not liking anyone else doing it, well that is the same all over and the Swiss are no different.

Naw

British/Irish have no problem with people laughing at them

Sense of humour, you see. How many international comedians come from Switzerland?

I rest my case

You are, however, as a nation immeasurably better at banking, insurance, watches, and cheese with holes in.

We all have our niches.
