Were you on a train with a yellow eye sticker (S-Bahn) or an intercity train?
...DB, after assessing your knowledge of our train system here, I'd suggest you to be placed in one of my advanced courses.

..I can start offering courses (if desired) on how to successfully dodge fares...I'll be discussing topics such as timetables, the psychology of a conductor and also a brief history of public transportation.
I'll happily be your guest teacher.

It was an intercity train. Does that make a difference?

Also, I noticed some sections have a yellow sign with an Eye graphics. I could never figure out what that meant. Anyone know?

How come when this happened to me, I only had to pay the difference between 1st and 2nd?
Depends on the train. Most, if not all of the S-Bahn is "selbstkontrolle" (the symbol in DB's post) which basically means you have to have the correct ticket before you board otherwise you'll be up for the full fine should the inspectors come along. On most of the ICs, IRs etc you can buy a ticket from the conductor - hence you only had to pay for the upgrade.

I believe the option of paying the difference is only available on longer train rides such as IC or IR....

That's pretty lucky, I would do 1st class all the time if the only issue was to pay the difference if I was caught.

I have to admit, I've been fairly lucky myself. I think I've been in 3-4 situations with a non-valid ticket, and a polite mix of english and swiss-german has gotten me out of paying any fine at all. It could have gone either way though.

I think its the difference of wheteher you're on an IC or IR as opposed to on an s-bahn.

On an IC or IR you can still pay the difference. On an S-bahn you get fined.

And I thought maybe it is only because some of us walk in the light.

(Relax, I'm just joking.)

This is very true---although it usually works best when the conductor isn't 'listening'

It also depends on the mood of the inspector.

I used to be a regular on the 751 bus from Stettbach to Kirche Fluntern. Although this journey both starts and ends in zone 10, the bus enters zone 21 for a brief bit in the middle. So technically you need a two zone ticket to use it. I gather a lot of people don't know this, or maybe just try their luck. I've often seen inspectors charge the difference rather than the full fine, so I gather this is at their discretion.

After all, the odour of poverty does tend to linger, even after the offender has moved to the appropriate carriage.

So true. I become especially miffed when the proles pass through First Class to enter a different second class carriage.

I also got my second and third fines recently due to some stupid mistakes even though I had a ticket. Is it true that I have a criminal record now for the 3rd fine?
Sounds like you deserve one

difference is self control trains/those with yellow stickers
and a train with a conductor where you can pay the top-up.
sticker-plastered=fined if you are in the wrong class section.

I'll second that.

Nothing worse than travelling in comfort on the train, then having to snuggle up to some odorous prole in the omnibus, merely to get home.

First Class buses really are the way forward.
