Re: Finally got caught on the train 80CHF fine

A month or so I couldn't find my annual abo, so had to go through the whole rigmarole of having a ticket issues with said 2 security offers.

I was terse and pissed (as I know I have my abo and it is "named" so cannot be shared) and didn't like the attitude of you're a criminal - indeed I've noticed that they increasingly have transport police with them.

Anyway, I got to my car, checked again, found my abo and rushed back to the station - luckily the inspectors had had to get out of train to book me & were still on the platform. I was able to show it to them and they cancelled it on the spot... so a happy tale for once.

Just you wait until the Zürcher take revenge on the Basler.

Not sure how long that will take, mind.

Hmm, so now I know what should happen to all those economy class passengers on an airplane who trapes through business class to use the loo up front. What a great way to generate revenue!

And rightly so that they have police with them. Have you ever seen the ticket control at Langstrasse/Limattplatz in Zürich

It's actually worth calling up and explaining your situation; I've had similar run-ins when I've accidentally bought a ticket that's 'direct' and the train I chose took a roundabout route which bypasses other zones...had a 100 CHF fine reduced to 40 for example...also had it reduced to nothing another time.

Definitely worth appealing if you made a genuine mistake.

The SBB make ticket buying to complicated with all these zones. Its been often criticized. Especially the double zone prices like Zürich zone 110 and Winterthur-both count as two zones and all these alternatives routes and prices that are suggested on the ticket machine.

This can help

Some time has passed without activity on this thread but to add to the list of woes

I yesterday accidentally sat in first class and got a fine. I was really puzzled how I had made the mistake. When I got off, I saw that the train door was marked '2' on the left and '1' on the right. As far as I could tell, if you walked left as you embarked, you went downstairs and it was second class. If you walked right, you went upstairs and it was first class. I had approached the door from the left side and seen the 2 but decided to go upstairs which was immediately on the right side after entering.
The train I take has similar configuration, but the 1st class seats have a piece of fabric with a "1" on them on the seats and there's a 1 on the glass at the top of the wall as you go up the steps. Kind of like this, except sometimes it's red and sometimes it's white:

Usually 1 class is fairly empty

Is it?

How many times have you been asked not to quote German language links without some sort of explanation? Is it any wonder your red blobs are creeping up again so fast?

Re: Finally got caught on the train 80CHF fine

+1 for calling them and giving it a shot - I got mine halved.

I drunkenly sat in 1st class by accident and presented my 2nd class monthly to an un-amused inspector. I called them up and explained it was an honest mistake and that I did have a ticket. The lady halved it for me and also mentioned that depending on what train you're on will dictate how much they can help you - if I recall she said an IC trains are much harder for them to assist on.

A bit annoyed at myself - I had a ticket but accidentally sat in the 1st class. I realised just as the train started to move and I got up to move to a 2nd class area but the inspector came and fined me as I was already in the 1st class area.

He gave me a ticket and pointed out a phone number to call but I couldn't make out whether he was saying I could call to get an explanation of the fine or should call to explain the situation with a view to getting a reduction. Anyone had experience of this and whether it is worth trying to get a reduction?

I was actually wondering if I would have been better off not getting a ticket at all since this would have offset the 80CHF fine? Maybe lost_inbroad is onto something after all?
"Finally got caught on the train 80CHF fine"

Does that imply that at last you have been caught sitting in 1st class?

More that it is inevitable that you make a mistake and get fined for it.
