Spitting

I've visited many cities in my life and lived/worked in a few.

Apart from Beijing, which I partly put down to air pollution, I've never been anywhere with as many people spitting huge globs of phlegm on the pavement as ... Basel.

Anyone know why?

It's not because of the high percentage of smokers as I spent a year in Stuttgart, which seems to have a similar amount of smokers, and hardly anyone spit.

It's because of the food. Dairy products cause moisture in our bodies and moisture creates phlegm.

Interesting answer but I'm sure in France they consume more dairy products and Paris isn't a spitting city. What about other cities in Switzerland?

..not necessarily. Think of all the milk, chocolate and cheese that is being consumed on a daily basis. In addition, there isn't really a main Swiss cuisine anymore. As most people don't really cook but rather eat ready to make in 10min meals.

As a gay man I give you permission to spit while you're exercising but not whilst standing at a tram stop.

Re: Spitting

I got the idea that it was the in thing to do so I started to do it as well....especially in Klein Basel where I felt really good doing it at Tram stops, kiosks, outside McDonalds (& almost inside McDonalds), in smoking areas outside bars & under bridges. No-one batted an eyelid.

Can't wait to go back next week for another evening session.

But what do the gay men in Zurich who are walking by whilst she's exercising think about this?
