Bloody last second snipers on ebay...

...I hate you. I really do. I could do the same you do, but this takes the whole fun out of the entire auction idea...

I know, I tried out mysniper.com before. But I do not enjoy it at all: The one reasons to buy something from ebay is to get exicted weather or not you will be the highest bidder in the end. You look the last two or three minutes on your screen and I love to see the time slowly running out with me being the highest bidder. Sniping on the last second just makes the whole thing less fun... a shame that ebay does not manage or want to stop this rubbish. I would expect them to be able to detect the IPs from the largest sniping websites or add some safety feature that would prevent it like one of those "type the letters you see in the box" checks when you log in on ebay.

Dude, get over it and join esnipe.com. It's the only way to ensure that you really get what you want for a price that you want.

fun versus the product that you really want....hmmm...decisions I admit that I am guilty of using such programs though. Saves me going into cardiac arrest.

Re: Bloody last second snipers on ebay...

Well, sorry about your misfortune on Ebay. As for me, I bid what I want to pay and leave it at that, since I cannot be in front of the PC when the auction ends.

When I started out on Ebay Australia many many moons ago, I got sniped out and truly understand the feeling. I used to watch when the auctions ended, and when I won the normal manner, it was fantastic and addictive. Then came the snipers, and I got into the game as well, and no looking back since.

Yeah, but this only works if you are bidding on something where you make up your mind by comparing prices online: You know what it is worth and how much you want to spend, enter that and wait if it worked. I typically look at stuff that is a bit harder to compare and would really just like to see how the bidding develops.

Looks like I will use my sniper account again then...

strange, i really enjoy the feeling on ebay of seeing some smuck think he's going to win with his pathetic bid when i know i'm going to swoop in at the last second and overbid him.

You should be working on your MBA and not mucking about on either ebay or this site. I'm going to tell your mummy.

Re: Bloody last second snipers on ebay...

Sniping makes everything so much easier. There are naysayers who say it kills the 'live auction' experience, but having bid at live auctions I can say it's more frustrating when some idiot gets emotional about an item or simply the act of winning and drives up the price on something that doesn't merit it.

The worst is Ricardo, where if a bid is placed in the last seconds the auction is automatically extended 5 minutes.

No matter what, you have to decide what you are willing to pay for something. Whether you do that days before the auction's end or in the last seconds doesn't change that fact. Sniping just makes the whole process cleaner and easier and you don't have to worry about schmucks needling away at the price nor have to be glued to the computer at ungodly hours.

And it doesn't harm the seller- check out the bid history on this gem:

Air Raid Atari 2600

If my better half wants something I become the snipe king. I have no need for programs. I laugh in their face. Muwahaha...like that.

This is one crazy auction, but the last bid has been made 25 secs before the end - so there was no automated sniper involved as they typically do it in less than 10 seconds. Or what was the point with the auction?

Some research to help convince doubters...

Quote:
a study by South Korean physicists confirms via some elaborate mathematical modeling that "sniping" — waiting for the very last second to submit your bid on that Elvis-shape throw rug — is indeed "a rational and effective strategy to win in an eBay auction."

My point is the sniper, who wasn't the high bidder, did the seller a service by pushing the price up quite a bit. The winning bidder won because he placed his bid earlier at what he was comfortable paying; the sniper thought he had it in the bag but he didn't. Had this been Ricardo the 'sniper' could have come in and then whittled away at the high price until he just surpassed it, then the other guy does the same and so forth until someone keels over.

I know you weren't talking about Ricardo, but that system is the next step after banning sniping.

Re: Bloody last second snipers on ebay...

Try Ricardo instead! they have a different policy which excludes last-minute snipers - meaning that if one puts in a bid within the last few minutes, the bidding reverts to a 5 minute tick-down. We use it all the time.

Re: Bloody last second snipers on ebay...

ebay is good for buyers as you can snipe and get a cheaper price. ricardo is good for sellers as you can't snipe.
