Phone Etiquette

Is it just me or does it seem that people in Switzerland (not just Swiss people) tend to butt in while you are talking on the phone and start a conversation?

...now you are going slightly overboard there. Either way, ...I'm talking about aquaintances whom start random conversations...as in "Hey, how's it going...or "long time no see"...

we are in the era of instantaneous satisfaction (not that talking to you is per se a satisfaction). Our generation wants to order now and get the service/product delivered now or within a few hours. No patience for anything, time is short and precious. Our communication is not anymore a continuous flow of intelligent words but rather a stream of chopped words and ideas.

So if you're talking on your mobile phone, people think that you can anyway resume the conversation anytime later. If you're using your cell phone in a public space then it means that you accepted the terms and conditions of this new communication: sharing everything and interruptions at any time for any reason.

just some wild notes and thoughts....

Re: Phone Etiquette

Have you tried the universal language of this?

Anyone in the right mind will back away if you hold up your hand indicating that you are on the phone. I hope.

...yes, and the fact that I sit at a table...holding one phone to the ear and talking, writing an email on the other phone and taking notes doesn't seem to scare off enough inconsideratss whom have no further task in life than asking me how I'm doing.

Maybe because you are writing an email they think you are on hold on the phone?

Obviously as you are writing an email, on the phone and taking notes (and not forgetting posting on the EF) your colleagues realise just how truly truly talented you are, and that handling another conversation it just the challenge you need.
