Re: Dear Swiss "Punk"...

It's funny, I was checking the facebook page of a friend of mine back home (she happens to be a punk/goth) and her status says:

I rather be hated for who I am, then loved for who I'm not...

I have to agree to that, and it made me think about this thread.

Wow, what a catalog ... do you think he'd understand what you're calling him there?

I'd be curious to know what names he'd be calling you!

Aren't their clothes too loose for that?

You know, while I completely get her sentiment and it is a moto of a movement, sure, and personally consider it cute, I still can't get rid of the thought that most of the hate is only imagined. They expect it from the normals, maybe want it, it fits within the portray of themselves and the philosophy. Since, most of the modern mainstream people I know, do not hate punks. Hate is not even in the registry when you think about people around us. I think it is actually quite patronising to expect it from the average person these days. Punks, goths, hippies, emos, hc, whoever have so become part of normal life (despite some of the sentiments at this thread) that I think that the "hate me, please, so I have something to identify myself against" pose is just part of the rebellious drama. You know, the usual teenage angst.

But, maybe it's just openminded Europe, or maybe I give the normals too much credit..Afterall, we all are just normals..Society will always be the mix of weirdness and individuality, of any sorts, sometimes visible sometimes not.

I understand what you are saying MusicChick, but I don't think she meant hate in such a strong way really. I think it is basically 'I like this style and I don't want to change myself to please others'.
I got to know her through a doggy-walking group. She was the only punk looking person in this group, I always thought it was kinda of cute But she is a very nice person, I don't think she's much of 'hate the world' kind of type nor of course did she not get treated any differently from us who were wearing our hiking outfits

I think some 'alternative' people like to be outcasts or hated. Unfortunately most of us don't give a f*!k.

Seriously, there is no such thing as alternative anymore. Society is a mish-mash of niche subcultures; progressiveness and the internet has been great in this regard.

I don't think that's what HB's saying . . .

It's just that most of what would have counted as alternative in the past has been accepted by the mainstream. How exactly can you mark yourself out as alternative these days? Is being an anti-globalisation protester alternative? Is taking drugs? Is living in a menage-a-trois? Tolerance has made challenging intolerance more tricky . . . there's not so much of it about.

Re: Dear Swiss "Punk"...

You are right, so less tongue in cheek I`d like to add. With so much labeling and pidgeon-holing, it`s all become a bit hard to tell who`s who. But free thinking, believing in yourself before the doctrine, being able to say no when you know it`s not right will help you be whoever you chose to be, be that punk or banker.

Re: Dear Swiss "Punk"...

Been thinking more about it... whatever I´m labeled, the point is I do want an alternative. I´m not happy with this consumer-capitalistic crap. I don´t want the high-tech soon to be superceeded stuff that gets over produced just to make a buck. I´m angry at the condition that we leave this planet. I´m angry at the lack of respect we show nature and the other creatures on this planet. I don´t need the new cd-ipod-lipstick-camera-oilspils-cocktail-mood-drug-stilletos-energydrink-sunglasses-ravingmaddictators-satnav-pygmyhippo-hellokitty-audiquatro-antiwrinkle-extinctspecies-charity-careeradvancement-facebook-ironman-nike-smokefree-teethbleach-blingbling that they try to shove down my throat. I do want starynights-nosmog-allgodscreatures-nowork and a good lie-in.

That's why I love the mandatory Swiss army service.

Makes real men out of these punks.
No, it does NOT ! Everything, like accommodation, transport, food, infrastructure is fully organised. Those who are "men" before remain as such and those who are not do not become men

Whether somebody who was "punk" before will not become punk again is a different issue.

Re: Dear Swiss "Punk"...

So there I was, browsing through my beloved Retronaut blog, when I came across this collection of photographs of some, quite frankly, half-arsed punks from the fifties and early sixties. I chuckled, turned to my wife and commented that they must have been Swiss.

Imagine my horror when I realised that they actually were Swiss!

It looks like slightly-embarrassing punkdom has something of a history in this part of the world...

They were proto-punks.

But we're all for diversity, if you want to dress in funny clothes and live on the charity of others, ranting about the evils of society, then you got to wear a colourful dress, a funny collar or a hat and maybe wave something about. Then people will let you be and even think you're doing something worthwhile.
