Just kidding, I really wanted to tidy up my yard for the Swiss National Day and I was doing it in the afternoon well within the time limit and in addition, mine is a cordless li-on battery mower.
To clarify the matter. While 1st August is a kind of Sunday, in view of the general noise-level of that day no policemen in Switzerland would intervene due to a lawn-mower in action. Where I live here, there were dozens of "noise-makers" launched over the past 3 days, starting at noon, and this within 300 meters from the next police-station. Never saw any of them turning up. So that the "appeal" of that grumpy old git most likely would have been turned down by the policemen.

| | Re: First time I've been shouted at [ Lawn Mowing ] | Quote: | | | | | The correct reply would have been to tell her "you will experience far more noise later today" ..... I mean, to complain about lawn-mower noise on 1st August does not really make much sense | | | | | Just to clarify, I was talking about the OP who was not moving on the 1st of August but rather on 22.05.2010 which I assume makes a lot more sense? |

A) it was 11.55 or 12.01
B) whether the complainer meant to stop immediately or at 12
There ARE people who sit at the window behind curtains and watch out for
- people parking wrongly
- people making too much noise at the wrong time
- people talking too loudly
- people throwing things away in a "non-approved" way
- people who for them look like personified trouble
- people looking like "not really belonging here"
- people not wearing "decent" clothing
their preferred targets are people of less than 20 years of age
followed by -- foreigners
followed by -- people from other Cantons

Ironically though I find that quite a lot of these sort of people are just lonely and if the community would engage them, it would be much less of a problem. Of course there are those incurable arseholes, and they will continue to be incurable arseholes until they die. |

Simply go to the website of your commune, e.g. I live in Gland and here's the regulations pls note that each commune may have different regulations, e.g. there is no restriction between noon to 2pm in Gland) Article 20 Il est interdit de troubler la tranquillité et le repos des voisins par

| | Re: First time I've been shouted at [ Lawn Mowing ]
I hadn't finished all my mowing on Saturday, and was busy on Sunday, so wanted to finish it on Monday (1st Aug). I was up late, with a late breakfast, and was ready to pull the chord at exactly 12.00 - but as it was Swiss National Day, I made the concession and didn't get going until 1.00. Finished in half an hour.
None of my neighbours are capable of shouting, anyway - and if they could, I can shout back louder - and they know it.
And .... the reason I mowed on this day, was just to finish it all to a uniform level, ready for the next time.
And .... Aug. 1st is a feiertag - but not a Sunday - a bit like a Brit. Bank Holiday Monday - anything goes in the name of fun.

To be honest, I give a the middle finger with a loud FU!! I don't tolerate yelling by the Swiss or anyone for that matter. If they call the police let them! In fact, they have called the police and they have been very respectful and did take my side!

11:30 to 14:00 ( most only go to 13:30) is Mittagspause. You don't call on people or disturb them with any noise. Many Swiss go home have lunch and nap, children nap. The same after 22:00 hours.
Actually on Sunday here in the US I was awoken at 8:30 by a lawn mower, then he took a break and went back to it at 11:30, then another one started and I wished that we had Swiss rules. Except then there are the church bells, and goat bells and sheep bells and cow bells | This user would like to thank for this useful post:

What, you mean you don't have cow bells and goat bells disturibing your mid-day nap?
I'm surprised.
