Converting Coop Trophy points to Miles and More miles

With the current Coop Trophy scheme you can swap a card with 30 tokens (1 token per CHF 10 spent) for 2000 Miles and More miles. The catch is that you have to pay an additional CHF 34.90 for each card.

For a European flight using a Miles and More airline, the standard mile spend is 30,000. So, you'd need fifteen Trophy cards and you'd have to pay CHF 525.50

That's a pretty bad deal as most European flights cost less than CHF 500.

Glad I did the calc before I schlepped down to the Coop Kiosk.

Am I missing something here?

Re: Converting Coop Trophy points to Miles and More miles

Not at all - its only worth it if u are topping up - i.e. u are short 2,000/4,000 miles for a flight. Additional investment doesn't make sense.

If u need miles use the Coop points - u get one for each Franc spent.

There are various offers throughout the year where u can get a good transfer rate - 10,000 Coop points to 6666 miles - no cost.

Re: Converting Coop Trophy points to Miles and More miles

These miles and more miles gained via the Coop points should not be used to claim a standard economy seat, this simply makes no sense.

There IS the point that using miles, you are able to get a "flexible" seat since you can reclaim your miles back if you decide not to fly and thus, the 30k miles may very well be worth the +500chf when compared to the standard cost of a flexible ticket.

But the real magic comes from using these miles for a Business, or better yet, a First class flight.

A first class flight from Geneva to Las Vegas (to give an example) in First requires 140k miles. That's about 2500chf worth of Coop points. Now go on a Swiss or Lufthansa page and see how much it'll cost you in cash to book a simple NON-flexible flight to LAS... Yup, that's right, could very well be 10k chf.

Thanks to the use of my Miles and More Amex and these Coop trophy points, I earn some 100k miles a year, meaning I get to fly Business and First class for a lot less than everyone else.

Just my two cents.

Re: Converting Coop Trophy points to Miles and More miles

Forgot to mention. There's between 1 and 2 Coop Trophy deals going on each year. That's 30-60k in miles, so ~500-1000chf.

On top of this, if you shop at Coop, you can get their Supercard which earns you Coop points which can ALSO be transferred to Miles and More Miles. That could be a few hundred points each week due to grocery shopping, giving you an extra 5-10k miles thanks to transfers (which occasionally in the past have included special deals such as 2 points = 1.5 miles).

And if you have the M&M Amex (Platinum's nice, but expensive, Gold's more like it, and they occasionally do deals like 20k miles for new sign-ins, very much worth it for the fee you pay to get an Amex and Visa!), and you use this Amex (brings in 2 or 1.5 Miles for every 2 chf spent depending on if it's the Plat or Gold), you'll make another 5-10k Miles just on the shopping you do at Coop every year.

So that's a triple dose of miles if you play "this" particular game (and there are more games). And even based on an economical claiming of miles via the above mentioned deals, you should still be able to make about 50k in miles every year.

Only problem I have these days is that as I'm single, my grocery shopping costs are pretty low meaning I might not get the full set of cards over the duration of the promotion... so if anyone has any fully filled Coop Trophy cards and wants to send them my way, please do

Re: Converting Coop Trophy points to Miles and More miles

I think Shinigami's right. It's the upgrades.

e.g. ZRH-LAX return, flying first week of September, currently costs CHF 891 in economy. It costs CHF 2598 in Business.

So the upgrade cost in cash is CHF1707, but would cost you 35,000 miles (CHF 610.75 using only Trophy points).

Another item of interest is the 'Smart Flights' which have to be booked within two weeks of the flight. A European flight costs 15,000 miles.

Re: Converting Coop Trophy points to Miles and More miles

Another good way to use Miles and More, which makes the use of Trophy cards worthwhile as well, is the bargain flight offers.

e.g. for Lufthansa there are a wide range of flights from 10,000 miles up.

http://www.meilenschnaeppchen.de/index_en.htm

Swiss is useless in this regard though . . . '+++ SWISS International Air Lines is currently not offering any mileage bargains. Please drop by again - there'll be more new offers to be had soon! +++'

For anyone who wants to convert regular Coop points from the supercard to miles: They are offering 33% more miles than usual, today (January 14, 2016), so you may wish to do it, today.

Here are the details: https://www.praemienshop.ch/de/search/?text=miles

Re: Converting Coop Trophy points to Miles and More miles

Getting extra miles from coop trophy or supercard points are quite a deal, if used wisely.

Best ways I see to burn your miles would be redeeming long haul business class meilenschnäppchen and companion award tickets, preferably 1st class (only available for senator and hon members).

Beetled off to Coop at 9pm on a Saturday night to get two crates of wine to make sure I had enough points to convert...well that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Re: Converting Coop Trophy points to Miles and More miles

I was just at Coop and Swiss has canceled the offer! This seems to me to be "false advertising" as the current "Trophy Booklet" clearly states the possibility to purchase miles.

Re: Converting Coop Trophy points to Miles and More miles

Indeed:

https://www.coop.ch/de/einkaufen/trophy/milesmore.html

Looks like Swiss made changes to the programme despite a valid contract with Coop and so it was stopped effective 23 May.
According to the Handelszeitung it is due to a lawsuit in Germany in which a customer is suing Lufthansa to be able to exchanges his miles for cash, alleging that miles are an e-currency.

If you have already bought your code and have not yet redeemed it for Miles online, you can return it, get a refund plus the 20 Trophy stamps to purchase a Tupperware product.

Re: Converting Coop Trophy points to Miles and More miles

What a shame.

It was rare that the Trophy promotion offered anything of interest - redeeming for miles was only reason I collected stickers.

Yet another nail in the coffin of my Coop loyalty.

Re: Converting Coop Trophy points to Miles and More miles

Two years ago I used the trophy points to buy a lot of pans for my new apartment, it was definitely not bad. But the current Tupperware trophy is pretty awful, given that those products are not suitable for freezing nor for microwave use.
