The title of this thread is going through a few changes. I expect it soon to read "Comment regarding meteorological conditions in Switzerland not matching the expected norm for this time of year [June 2010] [Basel] [Colder than usual] [More rain]".

Well, I was going to bitch about the freakin gloom, but here in Bern, I find that there are sunny spots here and there, and even some blue sky peeking through.
Just need to up my antidepressant dose and take a walk, and all will be fine........... |

| | Re: I want to shoot that B**** | Quote: | | | | | I can tell you, last summer was awesome! It was good from the very beginning of spring! We had such a nice summer!
The year before is when we arrived here and it was the same shitty weather as this year! | | | | | Based on my own empirical research (having spent 10 years here), 8 out of 10 summers in German speaking Switzerland are bad. You rarely get more than 2-3 consecutive days of sunny weather, then immediately followed by rain and cold again. What I always found astonishing is just how cold it gets - even in the middle of July or August once it starts raining, temperatures drop to below 10°C.
I remember once seeing a comparison of sunny hours per year of different cities - Zurich gets about half as much sunshine per year as Chicago and less than any city in North America (incl. Canada)..... also less than London, btw.

The previous two years we went for a boat ride on Lake Luzern on Easter weekend, because it was so nice. We have yet to go this year.
The sun just peeked out for a moment here, but now it's gone again. Tomorrow morning at 9:12 we hope to be on the Dampfschiff Schiller, assuming the sun actually comes out. Maybe by the time we get home the grass will have dried out enough to actually mow.

| | Re: I want to shoot that B**** | Quote: | | | | | I had the opposite reaction - the first summer I moved to Switzerland was the awful summer of 2003, 40+ for weeks.
I just moved to Manchester, everyone's warned me about the rain here, but it is no more rainy than Basel ever was but much less hot. Thankfully. | | | | | I would gladly put up with more rainfall ( if that's possible!) to live back in Manchester ( well, Cheshire) It's a fab place to live regardless of the weather.
My work contract is a rolling pattern of 6 days in UK followed by 12 days here in Switzerland and I can confirm, Britain has a drier climate than here.
I've never understood why us Brits get bad press for having rubbish weather. It's just not true. I have been to Lyon, Toulouse, Prague, Stockholm and lots of other places around Europe recently and none of them are having a great summer.
England last week was bliss, walking around Windsor and Eton, lots of people sitting eating cream teas and drinking Pimm's in the sunshine.
My Son and Two of his friends arrived here yesterday from a sunny, clear blue skies London It's the same there today, I'm bloomin' furious. |

I visited Lugano yesterday for the first time, and had splendid weather all day! A bit windy on the lake, but clear blue skies and warm sunshine (around 25') as people strolled along the lakeside eating their gelato |

It is 30 degrees+ here in NYC and humid. Been this way for a week. I could handle a few days of Zurich weather to cool off.

Weather forecast calls for it to override summer and go directly to autumn by saturday, almost freaked out at the news this morning.
