It will. Rainy June usually means lovely weather in July, August and September with a pleasant Indian Summer
I do hope you're right, but I find these kind of predictions to be about as reliable as the Böög. Nevertheless we can only be positive

Re: Weather rant

....have been here all my life....
my favorite season is the Fall and I've simply noticed a pattern over the years. Could be wrong, but usually when June is awful (I can remember rain ruining the 4th of July celebrations in Geneva as a kid) the rest of the summer is very pleasant

surely this must be the wettest summer on record so far in zurich?

anyone heard any statistics on this?
nope - according to MeteoSchweiz (http://www.meteoschweiz.admin.ch/web...sh2010MAM.html) this spring was normal. Actually, it was even slightly warmer and less rainy than the long-term average......

Continental Europe does have dry and sunny summers, but Switzerland doesn't. You need to go about 500-600km further to the east to get real continental climate (sunny, warm, dry - no green grass in summer) - CH has probably the worst climate in Europe because the warmer air from the South and the cooler air from the North meet right across the Swiss Alps - the result is, as you can see, nearly constant rain fall.

a schoolfriend of me, who has a house on the Lake of Lucerne, when it is rainy on a weekend, studies meteo-forecasts and then escapes with his wife to either Zurich or Lugano. Whichever is the lesser evil weather-wise. He has realized that Luzern and the Lake of Lucerne is very nice and beautiful but far more rainy than Zurich (which is rather rainy by international comparison)

The reason is easy to see. While the bad weather in Ireland goes on, it does not in Luzern, as it is blocked by the mountains.

"in the states" ? I believe you many things, except that it is 94F and sunshine all over the whole country I still remember a visit to the USA, and when I started (on Braniff) from NY La Guardia to Houston heavy snowfall started (in mid April), but when I landed in Houston it was sunny and most exceedingly hot.

Re: Weather rant

My 6 year old daughter left on her first over night trip with her gym club.. What was supposed to be a great weekend in Kandersteg and Niederhorn with plenty cool outdoor activities is going to turn into god knows what.. rain, temperature close to 0 and even snow are forecasted. I still don't understanf why they did not cancel... But I guess Emilie will have a blast anyways even if she freezes..

if you cancel events because of bad weather in CH they will never happen

been here 10 years - most company events, parties, etc. I can remember happened in bad weather. Kids growing up here get used to it - they don't know otherwise.

That they already have made all their bookings and arrangements is one side, more important is that nobody can tell them on which weekend the weather will be good

And you can be sure that there already is a badweather program in existence, which has been planned right at the same time as the goodweather program. Such is standard procedure in Switzerland.

You can do fun stuff indoors too! Camping in England is all about playing board games under cover

Re: Weather rant

Sorry if it sounds I m acting like a spoilt child but coming from France and a teacher from international schools, it is not uncommon to cancel trips when the weather is too horrible.

Now I understand that it is here different and that every things go ahead regardless of the weather. Another cultural thing I will have learnt today.

the train, other transports and activities had not been yet booked as we gave the money this morning at the time of departure. Only the place where they will sleep tonight would have been booked ahead I guess. I was not going to let down the organisers anyways..

What you however had in mind was the Pannonian Plateau (from Bratislava through Slovakia and Hungary over to the Karpato-Ukraine and Northern Romania and onward along the Black Sea to Donetsk and Rostov-on-the-Don. This is "Eastern Continental Europe". For Western Continental Europe, study the meteo-charts for Brest, Dinard, Paris, Strassburg and Stuttgart !

Re: Weather rant

I love the weather. I love the rain, the sun, the drizzle, the snow when it comes.

My advice for those not enjoying it? Try India for a bit if you don't like it here, and you will be reformed. I can breath again. That is enough.

Re: Weather rant

If ya'll want to have an idea ahead of time what to plan for, watch the weather coming off the African coast and heading toward the Gulf of Mexico and Florida.

If there is a rainy weather pattern there, particularly of severe storm variety, usually they bump up the coast of the US and Canada before getting swept east and eventually winding up coming across our way.

Sure it loses some intensity and moisture along the way but the way the mountains here "scrape" and "squeeze" the clouds, we get a good bit of whatever hadn't yet come down.

I realize this is a very simple view of it all but I am no expert in meteorology (simply very observant ) and I didn't want to get toooo long winded (particularly in case of being wrong in some way ).

"Wetter" as in amount of rainfall not hours of rainfall.
Difference is in Ireland it drizzles all day every day throughout the Summer- what you call "soft" rain.
In Luzern it usually all comes down at once in short, sharp thunderstorms, then it's gone.
This year we're getting Irish type rainfall here.
