The summer will officialy start from today 21 June 2010 at 11.28 UTC (or 12.28 CET). It's the exact time of the solstice.
I think the rant about the cold summer becomes legitimate after that time and date.

Went for a walk last night, it was rainy, cold and the air smelt of wood smoke, something I associate with end of November.
The forecast calls for the end of the rain by the middle of the week and for Friday around 30 deg. It will be like somebody flicked as switch from cold/wet to hot/muggy.

There are 3 cherry trees on the estate we live on, and not one of them has more than 10 sorry-looking unripe cherries hanging from the branches. They are suffering from some kind of leaf blight too. The wife's balcony flowers are all stunted little things this year.
Cheers
Jim

I'm supposed to hike from Chamonix to Zermatt starting in about 2 weeks. I'm kind of holding my breath. We actually had a dusting of snow on the peaks around here over the weekend.

Flew back from the UK last night.Beautiful day warm/sunny clear summer day. Crossed the Channel - dense cloud all the way back to Zurich with no breaks. It may take some time to shift.

My wife left for home on 2nd may after we had some sunny weather here in Zurich.
She was away for 3 weeks and it rained nearly every day as I recall.
Soon as she got back it was beautiful sunshine.
Her first response was wow weather in Zurich always sunny!

A lot of the time it 'sun and clouds', ie, bright blue sky with fluffy white clouds skimming across, which is infinitely more pleasant than the blanket of greyness that seems to sit on the Zurich environs for days on end - very depressing.

I repeatedly over the years followed the British weather forecasts. When I was in London for 3 months in 72, I at first had to realize that the "weather" went through with 3times the speed it does in Zurich. This means that it is very changeable, but it also means that clouds turning up also go away and forward again. While a cloud here can stay on for many hours almost in the same place. And the clouds are stopped by the mountains and "merge" and convert into that grey blanket | This user would like to thank Wollishofener for this useful post: | |

Certainly about the rapid changeability of the British weather, and your explanation of the grey blanket makes perfect sense too. It is such a shame, as it really does cast a shadow over the stunning natural beauty of the area.
