New ZVV ticket machines won't take my 1 Fr. coins!

Is anybody else having trouble with the new blue ticket machines NOT ACCEPTING 1 FR. COINS?

Perhaps you were unlucky..

For instance, the latest ZVV ticket machines currently being tested will allow you to buy monthly travelcards and multiple tickets. The machines can also vary in terms of the means of payment: At certain ticket machines, you can only pay with coins while other machines accept banknotes or even plastic payment cards.
Here you can find out more about the ZVV automatic ticket machines and how they work:

I was unlucky for sure, but this machine actually accepted all of the other coins I put in (2 Fr, 5 fr, 50 rap). I think the one on our platform in Erlenbach is particularly sensitive for some reason.

Re: New ZVV ticket machines won't take my 1 Fr. coins!

Perhaps it stores the coins in little heaps and the Fr.1 heap was full?
I have a highly technical answer for all problems.

Re: New ZVV ticket machines won't take my 1 Fr. coins!

The older machines also refused to accept coins from time to time, and if you look at the older machines you'll often see scratch marks where people have rubbed an ill behaving coin against the machine in an attempt to make it work. According to my GF it works 70% of the time.

Longbyt may well have a point though.

Re: New ZVV ticket machines won't take my 1 Fr. coins!

That's an interesting hypothesis about the separate heaps of coins...I never actually think about them in the technical sense. I have already noticed some rub marks on a couple of the new blue machines for those ill-behaving coins.

But all in all, I come from the US...who am I to complain about the incredible public transportation system we have here in Zurich.

Be careful, you might be destroying a collectors item! Older nickel coins (less than 50rp.) and silver coins (50rp>2Fr until 1968, 5Fr>1969 excl.1968) often get rejected by machines. If a machine rejects a coin twice or more, I examine it. I have collected about 10 silver CH coins this way.

I'm resisting the temptation to offer a witty challenge to this statement..

It could be that your coin is funny money - or an original silver pressing.

These machines recognize the coins by their weight. If they don't accept your "Franke" you might wanna try and rub it against the spot on the machine where everyone else rubbed theirs ... :-)

This is a nice tip - I found a few silver coins this way. It also rejected two 1968 5 CHF coins though - not sure why

Speaking of these new machines, what's with the Near Field Payment areas on the machine? What do they work with?

SBB machines are far more complicated. After electrical stimulation, they measure the magnetic reflection of a coin, there are 15 measurements all performed in a fraction of a second. The parameters are affected also by the minting and surface patterns of each issue of coinage. Swiss coins are made from a special alloy. They are measured, sorted, and only the last 40 coins received of each denomination, are stored for possible return as change in a large wheel. Coins received before the last 40 coins of that type, are moved to the bulk storage and are not returned. This holding of the last 40 coins is to give out change, but also to stop any money laundering: if you put 40 forgeries in and press refund, you will get the same 40 forgeries back again. There is a maximum of 40 coins accepted for any one type of coin when buying a ticket.

Thousands of used coins are tested until an average profile is achieved. If the measurement of your coin is just outside this profile it will be rejected, and retrying it might work and the coin might be accepted before the tenth attempt. There is no need to scrape the paint off the machine!

Some old one pound British coins were over stamped by the Royal Mint and were then sold to Botswana in southern Africa. Later these coins started turning up in British rail ticket machines, about 15 each month. The British demanded a better profile to reject these over stamped coins. The Swiss company said yes, we can tighten the profile, but we need 1'000 coins and it will cost you £20'000. The British decided it wasn't worth the effort, and would accept the small £15 loss each month.

The Thailand 20 Baht coin is very similar to the 2€ Euro coin, maybe 1 in 20 Thai coins will pass through the coin checks, the profiles are very similar, if the profile is made tighter it would reject more genuine Euro coins.

I've got a few older coins in my desk drawer, from when I was in a different building and using vending machines more regularly. But a question for you - what are they worth, and to whom?

I've got <reaches into drawer> a 1911 2Fr, a 1944 and a 1962 10rp, and 20rp from 1921, 1953(*2) and 1943. Are any of these actually worth anything significantly above face value?
