we have cows about 100m from our home. they don't have bells. Why would cows need bells in an urban area?
So you can hear them?

Is that by any chance an action started by my infamous country woman?? She raised hell against the cow bells and then was surprised her application for a Swiss passport was denied....
No, she was in Fricktal in Aargau. This case is in the Zürich Oberland in Wald.

In the case you mentioned I was highly amused that this woman thought that after all her sh*t-stirring the local community would actually accept her naturalization application.

Re: Blo**y Cow Bells

Presumably the complainants cited the Nacht-mooer Ordnung.

A farmer in the Zuri Oberland has been told he has to remove cow bells at night from 10pm due to complaints. How sad. If you don't like country noises, stay in town people and enjoy the traffic, police, ambulances and Church bells.

This is local - clearly I need to do a bit more eavesdropping in the Landi queue (but can't hear what anyone is saying due to those BELLLS)

Re: Blo**y Cow Bells

Giving my 1 francs worth, albeit some time has lapsed since the OP's entry. I went to sleep at night in East London to the sound of police helicopters. Living in Swissy, I go to sleep to the sound of cow bells. I'll take the latter any day.

The good news for you OP, is that depending on where you live, you'll get silence in the winter because the cows will be locked up into barns. And again, depending on where you live, the cows will be rotated across a variety of paddocks, typically spending just a month or so in any given field.

Maybe otherwise you have the choice to close your windows (which should have amazing insulation properties if they're of modern Swiss standard) and instead enjoy the noise of an air cooler machine, or a fan?

I would have suggested you hang some wind chimes outside your window to drown out the cowbell noise, but........

Good luck!

You gives a damn about cow bells - or police helicopters - or boy racers.

You've never lived near a colony of mating frogs.

Re: Blo**y Cow Bells

I have the same issue to the point where we can't sleep with the window open now. We have about 5-10 cows just across the road (15 meters away maybe) and they just go all night and only solution is to close the window. You are not alone it's quite a common problem. Sure it's bovine that suffer from Insomnia we have!

Re: Blo**y Cow Bells

In the meantime, the bells at our local Church in the UK- just in line with our bedroom window- have now been repaired. So that is 4 bells per quarter + the hour. At midnight = 4 x 4 + 12 = 28 bells. That is 385 bells between midnight and 7am. Made in Loughborough and as deep and loud as Big Ben.

Peels twice a week for about 1hr to 1.30 hr- and loads of single bells at 8am on a Sunday. Love them really- but wish they could stop from 11pm to 7am- perhaps.
Cow bells are so gentle and soft by comparison, and help me fall asleep- and the bird Dawn chorus mixed with the bells is just magical. Warblers and blackbrids singing their little heart out. Love it.

Sounds like you're also missing the church bells. Don't you also have a nearby church that informs you of the time throughout the night? A Swiss must! Then there is also the Sunday morning low flying air traffic that routinely circles around Canton Zurich before landing!

I think they suffer the most being ground into burger meat and watching their male newborns taken from birth never to seen again. Except possibly on the same plate next to some nice Rosti. I doubt they lose any sleep, over our lack of sleep.

Just by coincidence this is now in 20min: http://www.20min.ch/schweiz/news/sto...gert--13115785

Seems that if you want to be Swiss you can't speak out against cow bells!
