Maybe you have a bad credit rating? I got one a week ago.

Thanks for the resurrection: just off to try the *99# trick..
I'm not talking about myself...just in general what I hear from people. I never got a telemarketing call as I only use cell phones.

Re: Telemarketing calls

yep, more than ever. But for me its a source of entertainment so happy it goes on.
The other day I had a young lady calling to ask some personal questions, therefore I suggested that before she get her 10 questions in then I should be allowed to ask a couple. She hung up shortly afterwards......

Re: Telemarketing calls

It is simple - some institutes (e.g. the market researchers) that are calling won't argue a long time if you tell them to take your landline nbr off their list. The one I used to work for has this practice in use. But I cannot speak for practises on behalf of the telemarketers who need to provide sales and outbound calls. Don't forget, often it's reputed companys, service providers, that rely on customer feedback that way - by outsourcing. It's way better they can use a CATI facility than having to do it themselves and have the companys image involved directly. The regularity a marketer is calling with is up to the informatics system - at some point the number dialled is computer generated.

Re: Telemarketing calls

In the Swiss Romande it's fairly easy to foil the tele-sales people if you answer the 'phone with a 'hello' with an aspirated 'h'.
That's usually followed by them asking if you speak French and a 'no' means they hang-up immediately.
Wouldn't work in Zurich unfortunately.

I think anyone answering their phone without their surname must be automatically labelled non-Swiss...

I've had one where the caller spoke first in German (region based), then French (first name based), then Spanish (surname based) then Portuguese (our surname's actual nationality) followed by Italian (guess they'd try that one too). The guy then spoke in English. I felt like asking "do you speak Swahili?"

Re: Telemarketing calls

Four tips for getting rid of telemarketers:

(i) Let them say their opening spiel - then ask them if they could repeat it in English as you don't understand - they normally hang up within seconds

(ii) If they ask to speak to Mr ...., then tearfully announce that they buried him this morning.

(iii) If they ask to speak to Mr ...., say "I'll go and get him"..then leave the phone off the hook and go back to whatever it was you were doing

(iv) Get your 4 y.o. to answer the call.

Cheers,
Nick

Re: Telemarketing calls

Funny thread you guys! I remember a few years back whilst living in Miami we got a call from some guy wanting to know if we were interested to buy two side by side plots of ground....at the cemetery!!

Then my brother's way of killing the conversation short is to say this.

"look I'm busy at the moment, but give me your cell number and I'll call you back!"

that usually puts an end to it

Re: Telemarketing calls

I have just received an unbelievably rude agressive telemarketing call from a wine salesman...He was calling from the telemarketing number that I am getting OFTEN. I said no thank you. He then mimicked my voice, and called me a mother f****r before he hung up. Not cool...still in shock! I called Swisscom who de-listed our number. (had previously asked them to put the do not call * next to our name and this clearly didn't work) This particular telemarketing firm's number displays when they call, but I tried *99# anyway to stop any future blocked numbers.
Swisscom gave me the number of Lauterkeit.ch. I phoned them but they said they can only help with inappropriate commercial solicitations and told me to go away...I'm pretty sure it doesn't get much more inappropriate than this..!?
Is there anything else I should do?
Thanks!

Re: Telemarketing calls

Thank you for resurrecting this thread. We have been getting calls from two numbers, one is a 0 800 and the other starts with 00999. We never pick up because of the numbers we see, but they just don''t stop, now they even call at 10 pm. I tried to backtrack the numbers but to no avail.

MG's sil says that it's illegal in Switzerland to call people without asking for permission - is that true?

Re: Telemarketing calls

Swisscom says it is legal, which is surprising given the level of civility and privacy here.
The number that we are getting is 0041445806330. They call all the time...during meals, late at night. They are relentless.
