nothing at all, but it is a common occurrence that as soon as a band achieves commercial success, that the hipsters of this world write them off.
That's very true.

Which is precisely why I take delight in playing Mika whenever my hipster friends visit from England.

It winds them up something rotten!

All I have to add to this thread is that I have that blooming Alejandro song stuck in my head.

Nickelback: band of the decade.

That sums it up perfectly I would say.

Lada Gaga is just a Madonna rip-off. The one song an exact copy.

I can still remember my disappointment when, after reading all about this new, eccentric, exciting singer (in the 20 Mins and Blick, admittedly) I finally got round to finding some of Lady Gaga's stuff on youtube.

She couldn't be more bland and derivative if she tried!

All meat dresses and no substance, she is...

To all those who don't understand French, he's singing about what he perceives to be a hot 14-year old that he runs into with his car. Only in France can you get away with sick stuff like that...

You do realise you're arguing with DB on modern music. He thinks Engelbert Humperdink is avant garde and pops in Cliff Richards to seduce a woman.
...which puts him about 10 years ahead of lib

That Glaswegian songstress Emma's Imagination who won Sky's 'Must be the Music' is astonishingly talented. I don't normally go in for these kind of cheesy programs, but the missus was watching it, and when she piped up, I was stopped in my tracks. Stunning voice, like a Scottish Chrissy Hine. She does a terrific version of 'Change' by the Defftones too:

Looking forward to her album....

Cheers

Jim

Just noticed this... cheeky bugger!

I'll have you know that my most successful seduction CD was a collection of Armenian duduk tunes played by Djivan Gasparyan. It was like magic music dust, I tell you!

Not as good as giving a private performance of the bouzouki, though...

People who are mad about pop music now are forgetting how terrible it was in the late 90s and early aughts. If anything, it's gotten much better.

Re: Don't call my name, don't call my name Alejandro (or the modern music rant)

The best thing to happen to music - in my opinion, at least - is youtube.

In the past, I'd be forced to listen to hours and hours of drivel on the radio before hearing something I liked. And listening to specialist radio stations or programmes wasn't really the answer as my tastes (like most people's) are so varied, and I simply didn't have time to listen to the rock show, the folk show, the world music show, the electronica show...

Now, I can get hints from the Song of the Day thread, read a review in a magazine or on the internet and go and listen to a sample straight away, for free. I don't have to download anything, so I can listen to the first ten seconds and turn it off if I don't like it without having lost any time or money. And, best of all, the sidebar gives a big list of stuff that is like what I'm listening to, so I can click and listen all evening, to my heart's content.

They've got everything from sixties electronica to Karelian singing to Coptic chant to seventies disco, and it doesn't cost a penny!

But they haven't got Theophany.

I have a great fondness for Last.FM, even if you do have to pay for it now. But come on, 3 Euros a month for the option of listening to music you like and often have never heard of? Great deal.

Last FM is good, but I prefer the flexibility of youtube, where I get to choose from a selection of computer generated alternatives.

And you get a video thrown in for free!

It's pop music with simple catchy hooks.. no worse than most other pop stars throughout the decades.
