Mandarin Cafe, ZH Stadelhofen: Check your bill!

Just a little warning for anyone who goes to the Cafe Mandarin at Zurich Stadelhofen: we just caught one of the waitresses trying to fiddle our bill - again!

It happened once before, a few weeks ago, but she took the bill away so we couldn't check it, although we were convinced at the time that it was a little too high. This time we caught her adding a drink to the bill that was supposed to be included in a "Komplett" meal. She brought over the correctly added bill, made a big fuss in very fast Swiss German, announced the new total verbally, then tried to take the bill away before we could challenge her. Except this time we did challenge her, and, after much argument (including a freshly printed incorrect bill!), got our money back.

It was only 4.50 - but if she's doing this to every customer who isn't a regular, she's probably making quite a tidy profit each day.

So, if you go there, be sure to check your bill and compare it with the prices listed on the menu.

Or just don't go there at all. The Brezel Koenig sells cheaper coffee, anyway.

We were wearing the jackets... but some people just have no respect for authority!

On the contrary, we were wearing the jackets - that's what's so baffling!
(grumble grumble... should take our Mitarbeiter discounts where we can get them, maybe it would all average out...)

It's a shame because I really like the Mandarin otherwise. It's such a laid back, unfussy, uninspired place - reminds me of cafes and diners back home. I wouldn't go out of my way to go there (not when there are so many nicer places within walking distance), but when you are at Stadelhofen anyway, and want to just sit somewhere with a coffee and wait for the next train...

Maybe we will keep going there, and just check our bill like hawks every time.

It's Swiss tradition. Does anybody bother to check their supermarket receipt? It's been mentioned on EF before, but I would say that almost every time, the price charged on at least one item in a basket of shopping will be higher than the shelf or "Aktion/Action" price. A few rappen/centimes per customer adds up to a tidy sum each day ...

Both Migros and Co-Op have been guilty of this, in my experience.

Is anyone at Hooters actually looking at the bill when the waitress presents it to them?

Hear, hear!
It is tedious, especially with a whiny toddler in tow, but do glance through your supermarket receipt. The idiots / cunning scammers at Volketswil COOP stuck an extra pack of beer onto my tab on two separate occasions.
The first time they did it they really c0cked up by trying to get me to pay for an invisible pack of Feldschlössen Alkoholfrei. It took me about 1/2 a second to spot that one. The check-out girl didn't even look at me as she re-calculated my bill.

Cheers

Jim

Re: Mandarin Cafe, ZH Stadelhofen: Check your bill!

Funny to see this.
I've only been to the Mandarin at Stadelhofen once, taking my grandma to lunch.
They charged me for an additional coffee. I would have complained, but my lovely, christian grandma made me let it go.
I took it as an isolated mistake, but I'll certainly check closely if i ever go there again.

No offense, but i seriously doubt that.
I don't check every time, but as far as i know, i've always received the discounts.

Btw.: What jackets are you guys talking about?

you should probably inform the manager/owner. i know if i owned the place, i would want to know so i could take care of the issue before word gets out that my staff is ripping off customers. who knows, they might do something nice for you in return!

i think the food there isn't great anyway! stadelhofen restaurant across the way is a bit more pricey, but worth it. everytime I've gone to mandarin, i've been disappointed.

Now that sounds like a plan!

We can sit there with a big piece of paper in front of each of us, and very obviously keep a tally of each drink purchased. Then, when the bills come, we each whip out a magnifying glass and spend at least ten minutes umming and ahing at it, before insisting that we pay separately, checking each drink against the tally.

I'm beginning to like this idea...

Re: Mandarin Cafe, ZH Stadelhofen: Check your bill!

In our local Migros "Do it and Hobby" (??), there is a cashier who nicks your Cumulus points.
She pretends to scan in your card, but I have recently noticed that it doesn't register.

Ok - points are not so important to me, but as I don't actually have a Cumulus card and collect the points for a local charity http://kirche-oftringen.ch/angebote/...iis-gwand.html, then it's too bad.
