What I really, really miss from home is theatre.
I am soooo with you there.

I never realized how spoiled I was for choice, how much I had taken for granted, until I left Chicago. Zürich has it's theater scene, but not the variety - and certainly not the affordability - one finds in other cities.

Besides, "Sein, oder nicht sein, das ist hier die Frage" just doesn't have the quite same ring, does it?

Re: Your first 'musical' and your first 'festival'?

Rising prices in the UK (I realised I was paying upwards of £100 a ticket sometimes which is just insane) and some decidedly tacky experiences at the Theaterspektakel (naked policemen - well apart from the hat - doing modern interpretive dance comes to mind) here in Zurich served to put my off theatre for about the past five years. I'm not sure if I will go back to it - maybe one day.

So actually I don't miss theatre much at all.

Aww, was that bad?

But yeah, theatre tickets can be very expensive. It is not quite an affordable hobby.

I always enjoy kid's performances. The only kitch I can take. And absurd drama.

1st Musical - Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Jason Donovan, London 1991)

Never been to a festival - my idea of hell.

Re: Your first 'musical' and your first 'festival'?

Gotta say, the musical I absolutely loathe with a vengeance is The Sound of Music. As soon as I hear Julie Andrews burst into "the hills are alive......" I want to run from the area screaming. I just cannot stand it.

RIP Christopher Plummer, he was so much more than this movie.

"Cats" at the Elgin theater... took a while to get how cheesy it is, but the staging was a marvel relative to the recent movie theater.
Glyndebourne festival, not what you would expect but it was fun to gawk!

What is worse than the musical itself is the way some people worship it.

I met a couple of American tourists in Austria some years ago who were devastated to discover that it wasn't being celebrated much more, seeing it was actually set in Austria.

Kitsch can be absurd.

I think that's what makes much of the fascination.

Re: Your first 'musical' and your first 'festival'?

I believe my first musical was around 6-7 years of age, Peter Pan somewhere in the South of the US. But I feel very appreciative that my father introduced us to the theatre from an early age, for some it stirs something inside of you and I have had a great appreciation for it ever since.

Particularly during my time living in London to 'discover' the West End or Oscar Wilde but as generic as it may seem Les Mis is the best or most memorable I have seen

First music festival, Paleo

The way American tourists worship some myths is charming. We're all very "exotic" to them.
(OK, some more than others but you get my point)

Re: Your first 'musical' and your first 'festival'?

My first musical was Winnie the Pooh starring Christopher Biggins at the Phoenix Theatre in London.
As a young child, I was strangely underwhelmed by the musical but having a bite to eat at the Golden Egg restaurant across the road beforehand was a real treat for a kid that didn't get to eat out much at all even if it was something with chips.

The last musical I went to see was the School of Rock with my kids and to see the pure joy on their faces for a full two hours was great. Definitely a must-see, with, or without kids.

All the music festivals I wish I had been to were well before my time.

The Gillian Lynne Theatre, London. I just checked and the musical closed last year.
