Re: Spot The Swiss Landmark

Deep Purple, I have to give you credit---you picked a tough site! And unlike some pictures here (like the ones I've posted) Google isn't much help this time. I thought the balls on those towers were time balls and that might be an observatory. But Wikipedia lists all the surviving time balls and none are listed in Switzerland.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_ball

So I'm betting that's some sort of monastery or church. That's about as far as I can get so far---I'll let you know if I make more progress...

I thought I recognised it as Bern, but wouldn't have got it without clues.

Here's one that requires several answers.

1. What is the building and where is it?
2. Where is it really?
3. What are the names of the three towers?
1. Stockalper Castle, Swissminiatur
2. Brig
3. Kaspar, Melchior, Balthasar

I can see how you got the time ball idea from this picture. That is nowhere near the reality though.

As far as I know, it has never been a religious building but there is a religious connection.

I expect this will be easy for you guys to pick out, so the only clue I'll give is that it's near France:

I think this is the military site at Pré Giroud, not far from Vallorbe. I went past it a few weeks ago when hiking up to the Dent de Vaulion from the station at Le Day.

This shouldn't be too tough, either. Hint: it's where "Africa" begins.

I am guessing an Italian border crossing but I cannot think of the Africa connection.

Did you get any further with the three towers?

Douglas' Breakfast guessed the answer correctly before me. And as far as the "Africa" comment, it's based on a joke he made in another thread.

I see his answer. Don't know how I missed it. He is near enough right.
It is Stockalper Castle (often also called Stockalper Palace).

This was, of course the model in SwissMinatur near Lugano. The actual one being in Brig.

I understand your Africa reference now but is doesn't help me to identify the location. It actually confuses me as my first thoughts must be wrong.

Forget "Africa"---you're on the right track. Keep going or DB will get the answer.

Africa doesn't really begin until you approach Rome. I am going to guess that it is the border crossing in Chiasso. I have only crossed it once, off of the highway, and that photo looks somewhat familiar.

DB. That was my first thought, but I don't know the specific location.

How about Via Bellinzona at the border, looking to the Northeast?

Re: Spot The Swiss Landmark

Patxi is correct, but I have to give major points to DB for the most creative way of answering my picture. It is the customs office on the Swiss side of the Ponte Chiasso bridge. DB is the one who joked on one of the SVP threads that "Africa begins at Chiasso."

That's the SVP's belief, not DB's. He probably believes Africa begins at the English Channel.

It's possible you're right. I got the impression from the caption that the picture was taken in Chiasso, but it might not have been at the Ponte Chiasso. It's possible it could have been taken at another border crossing in Ticino.

It is definitely Via Bellinzona. It is on the google map picture that I linked to

I was only going by the view from Google Earth, wherein the two rounded buildings on either side of the street can be seen behind the pavillion as you look toward the Swiss border (yellow line).

Edit: Just to clarify, both Via Bellinzona and Ponte Chiasso are located in Chiasso.
