Hi, I want to hang my kids clothes on one part of their storage shelves. I don't want to drill holes into the wood frame of the furniture so I was thinking of putting some type of rod that has a spring in the middle so it stays up and fits perfectly. There won't be a lot of weight on the rod, just a few dresses. I thought about a suspension curtain rod from the US, do they sell anything like that in CH?

Otherwise, any suggestion is appreciated.

I am using incorrect words, I meant to say tension not suspension! I need a tension rod...

like a shower curtain rod type of thing?

I was thinking shower rail too, but to be honest, I don't think it'll hold much. You'd be surprised how quickly it would fall down.

One option would be a pull up bar



But it is probably an expensive option, added to which, the amount you need to screw these things my make the cupboard sides bulge.

What kind of furniture have you got? Most are modular in nature, so you could potentially pay a visit to somewhere like Micasa, Fly or Ikea to get the rod and fix it using the parts that come with it.

maybe you can get a rod that screws into the wall rather than into your furniture? Or a simple wall shelf with a rod hanging off that...

I'm not much of a poster (I usually just lurk and soak up the wisdom) but I have to jump in here because I had exactly the same problem: inherited a wardrobe which was practically all shelves with hardly any space for hanging clothes. I actually tried the shower rod idea and it worked! I was a bit sceptical at first, but I've had the rod (got one from Migros, about 15CHF I think) up inside the wardrobe for about 2.5 months now, with about 10-15 tops/jackets hanging off it, and it hasn't slipped yet. I think just a few dresses would be fine. Probably works better with a shorter rod (obviously depends on the furniture), and you should be able to tell if it's being overloaded pretty quickly. Anyways, I just thought it was a pretty neat quick solution for a small amount of money!

Thanks for all the feedback. I did think about a shower rod but my space is only 40.6 cm in width (narrow), but long so a shower rod won't work for me. After looking up tension rods in the US, their standard size starts at 45.7cm so I am still on the hunt for something, I may just need to screw in the rod at the end of the day.

maybe you could get one of these curtain rods. it's designed where drilling wouldn't be practical. and it's cheap! was thinking of buying the same thing too. ;-)

edit: try this keyword online- "tension rod" you'll find plenty of different designs.

If you go to a DIY shop they sell (cross section) oval shaped rods for wardrobes, and there are also a pair of fixtures sold for each end, which you secure with one pair of screws. Maybe you need someone to saw the rod to the necessary length: about 40 cm (40.6 cm minus the thickness of the 2 fixtures)

How about two simple hooks scrwewd into the underside of a shelf, with a wooden or plastic rod (a piece of curtain rail for example) between them ? That's the technique I have used to improvise a wardrobe in my hallway, where I have a large cupboard with a shelf at about 1.70 metres high but no fixtures for hanging coats.
