Absolutely disgusted with American politics and the state of living here....

I am a 28 year old married man with a 2 year old son and aspirations of at least one more child. I currently stay at home with my son and my wife works as a behavioral psychologist for a group home for disabled adults incapable of leading regular lives due to limited mental capabilities. I am a trained electrician with a 4 year apprenticeship under my belt.

I am seriously considering leaving this wonderful country. Are things any better in Switzerland I guess would be my main question. I have been researching the laws and daily life there and I have read very good and very bad things.

I need to get my son out of here. I was hoping to get some advise on the subject from an American born individual currently living the "Swiss Dream". :)

Interesting that someone finds the "swiss dream" more appealing than the "american dream"

Oh Dear...I understand your plight. I have American and Swiss citizenship. Thank goodness for the Swiss Citizenship! I know America is turning into a "2nd world country", and the politics have become blatantly unethical. IMHO one of the biggest reason for the American downfall is PC (political correctness). A country must stand for something, you can't be for everyone. They must have their tradition and rules. My main residence is in Switzerland but I do work in USA from time to time. I am on my last assignment for USA then I am done. I'll come back only for visits.
If you would like to give Switzerland a try one of you (or both) should search for companies in Switzerland and see what kind of jobs are available. If they hire you and you get your permit then you are in business. I think Switzerland would be lovely for your child as children here can still walk around and play outside without fear of being kidnapped, pretty much. The economy is stable and you see where your tax dollars go. The quality of life is good. Swiss people will be a challenge and no-place is perfect. So I don't want to try and paint a 100% rosy picture. But the good definetly outweighs the bad points. Its a beautiful country. I think its worth a try for you guys to live here. I am sure other posters will have additional good info for you.:msnnerd:

Personally I think the American Dream is still true and still holds, but modern society has confused it with entitlement.

Eitherway the "Swiss Dream" is valid as well, but personally if I grew up 100% into it, I would be very depressed as an adult, and would feel like less of a contributor to society, rather a cog on wheel. But that's really good for some.

Home is where the heart is.
It's one thing to move for money which can equate to a better quality of life, but moving away from family can be a bigger price to pay than one expects.

Have you considered sunny Australia ? Your trade qualifications, and possibly that of your spouse might come in handy if contemplating migration, including job / tradesman prospects.

Perhaps you could explain what you think has gone wrong- and what you truly define as the problem currently?

I have indeed. The heat is really the main factor keeping me from seriously considering it, though not having to learn a new language is keeping it in the running. I moved from Florida to New Jersey to escape the heat. I am a much bigger fan of cold, which I imagine Switzerland can provide me with plenty!

Good suggestion! Electricians aka "sparkies" in Australia make serious money due to demand. Oz culture is also closer to the US in my opinion. Others may disagree but I was in NY & Orlando last week and it was a clear burst of familiarity for an English, Australian like myself.

Try Guantanamo, good climate, hot & cold running water (certainly cold anyway) 3 square meals a day, no pork.:D

The American dream is "finished" as we know it. This dream was mostly held by the American middle class. The middle class is being pushed out into poverty. With the millions of foreclosures and people unemployed believe me "its a nightmare for many". Basically IMHO there is no "Swiss Dream". Or I will paraphrase it "people dream of living in Switzerland". Switzerland is not the consumer machine like America. I find Europeans mostly "work to live" where as in USA it's "live to work"...

Exactly what it is it about America that is driving you out? Do you think, perhaps, you're being a bit overly dramatic? What makes you think being in Switzerland will make your life all puppies and unicorns? Is your wife on board with this plan?

That said, having lived in Australia, the heat doesn't have to be that unbearable if you pick the right place to live. :-) New Zealand would be my top choice, though. Spent a LOT of time there on vacation.

Just in case you're wondering, there aren't any libertarian paradises out there.

You could try tasmania, much cooler environment, or perhaps NZ.

Finding a job as an electrician is the least of your problems. On construction sites German is a must, better you can throw in some Albanian, Serbian, Italian, Spanish ...

Another point are the Swiss electrician's rule and safety books (tomes) which you have to master (Vorschriften, Regelwerke, Normen).

Many many many things. The straw that broke the camels back though is the current right wing childish foot stomping they call politics. When people who ran on deficit reduction and patriotism start denying 9/11 first responders the health care they need to combat the injuries they sustained being heroes because their hugely deficit increasing tax cuts have not been extended yet, I find myself needing to step away from the table.

America has lost it's common sense and gained corporate greed in it's place. I am ashamed to be a part of such a country. I look forward to the final raping of my rights which will be to be either photographed essentially naked and exposed to unstudied radiation or groped by a stranger when I leave this place. I could go on and on with my frustration, but I feel it unnecessary to the thread.

I just want to know if I am suffering from "the grass is always greener on the other side" while I entertain the thought of rearranging my life to Switzerland.

Have to agree, New Zealand is a paradise from a scenic point of view and society keeps life simple, but thats because there is a low population. Hence I'm not sure about the demand for Electricians like Australia.

Are you going to tell us whats really bugging you at the moment? Is it the mother in law or the like?
