Re: Meeting New Friends and Dating

Cant comment on the dating scene here but with regards to transportation to and fro Rapperswil, its a max 45 minutes ride on the Sbahn into the Zurich HB - with a spectacular view of the lake.

The S5 and S16 (if I am not wrong) runs regularly and there is a last train a little after midnight on weekdays to get you back home - and night trains every hour on weekends. A friend of mine lived in Rappi for a while after he split up with his OH and was looking for a new pad - didnt stop him having a social life in Zurich city at all!

Welcome in advance dude.

Hi, I have lived here for 12 years, alone for 2 years now and if you don't have a large house, prestige job and an excotic car.. forget it
Maybe if your target age range is 35+ the women are more like that... but for the younger crowd that doesn't really matter. There are thousands of single girls in Switzerland that have "normal" salaries and are just looking for nice, normal guys. To stereotype them all as cold and unforgiving gold-diggers is a tad unfair.

Switzerland just isn't big enough for the both of you!
Characteristically nonsensical.

I can see the Blick headlines now...

leading to a referendum thus....

Re: Meeting New Friends and Dating

My advice to you is to just give yourself some time to adjust to all the new things you are about to encounter - new job, new home, new social status, new culture, language... I have been divorced for a year and a half after a 20 year marriage & still feel I need some time to myself and to heal emotionally. It will be emotionally exhausting for a few months so I think not a great time to be looking for a new committed relationship on top of all that. It sounds like after 2 years of problems, that you are looking for a quality relationship & it is perhaps not the best time to begin that search. I moved to Switzerland 20 years ago and found the Swiss to be very gracious people but they do have a different way of making friends. They don't move around like we Americans do so they have friends since kindergarten. Just observe at first and give yourself time to adjust to all that is new. ...
All the best to you and find the many positive things about Switzerland - don't let anyone else's cynical attitude influence you. Every culture is different or it would be boring!

Re: Meeting New Friends and Dating

I know people might say i'm crazy, but there's actually quite of Swiss girls looking for dates / relations everywhere around CH, you just need to speak the language, understand the life style and get into networking with friends, this is how it all happens......and no, they're not all goldgrabbing witches

P.S: Just play it cool, once they sense you're hunting, they just avoid you......be super cool and natural

Re: Meeting New Friends and Dating

My experience is you meet "significant others" at the time you are least looking to do so. If you go to a party, pub or other situation looking for "lurve" you end up being so obvious as to be off-putting (or at least I do).

The thing to do is just be yourself; no posing etc - and if the women you meet don't like that then they're not going to be the ones for you. There is no point in trying to create a spark if it isn't there in the first place.

Cheers,
Nick

That would solve your dilemma, it's rather unfair of you to try and palm him off onto a hairy Joan Rivers type and keep the good ones for yourself!

You're right, that IS crazy. That Swiss women should be like regular girls in other countries? My my, and there was me listening to the tales of embittered expats, continually painting them to be Cruella De Ville incarnate. How dare you inject some sense into a dating thread.

Re: Meeting New Friends and Dating

Several of the posts here seem to be referring only to meeting Swiss people. Without a local language that is always going to be difficult.

On my trips to Switzerland I have met several expats who I would consider potential partners if I lived there

I know of people who have met their partners in Switzerland very quickly and 'love at first sight'. It is not all doom and gloom.

I need some advice from any wise men and women from the East (well, most of you are east of where I am in Yorkshire).

I am newly single again (seperated 3 months ago but marriage problems stretching back a couple of years).

I move to a place near Rapperswil next week to start a new job in CH . (following my own little star)

It's looks a bit far from Zurich to engage in the regular social scene (I guess?) and it's a bit rural. Naturally I am worried about being isolated socially, although I may get to know some people through work.

I'd really like to do some dating but I'm a bit rusty after 10 years off the 'scene' (not that I was ever on the scene!!) and a bit wary of the dating websites having never done that before.

I guess what I'm saying is that I'm a bit concerned about the frequency at which i might meet attractive, intelligent, humorous women! Will it be frequently or seldom? Will I have to endure dozens of internet-generated dates with mutually incompatible people? If they are Swiss will they find some of the sames things funny and will they tolerate my lack of either swiss german of high german (for now)?

I just don't have a feel for how difficult or easy it will be for me compared to the UK - and I don't even know how that rates as I haven't really been out and about here for a while (just working in a company with 270 men and 14 women!)

So, if you have any advice can you let me know??

Diggdog
Not only is Rapperswil-Jona a nice modern town, you by S-Bahn only need half an hour to Zch-Stadelhofen

Look out for meet-ups, you will probably need to get on the train to Zurich occasionally, to meet a wider variety. Many Swiss love the opportunity to practice speaking English so you may be a hot commodity.
.
Let's have it mentioned that people from Zurich ocasionally get on the trains to Rapperswil, Zug, Luzern, Lugano, Bern, Geneva, Basel, Schaffhausen and Kreuzlingen/Konstanz. I mean, the whole area including places like Konstanz, Singen, Lörrach, Mülhausen, Annemasse, Varese and Como has as many or possibly even less inhabitants than Greater London or Greater Paris

Well, the only time that I've dated a Swiss that I didn't normally speak English with is my current girlfriend, as she only speaks Italian, despite being (technically) Swiss-German.

Re: Meeting New Friends and Dating

After brief but intensive research into the dating game, I've come up with the following:

- EF Forum is fabulous
- Swissfriends is great to pass the time and you might meet some nice women
- glocals has some fantastic single events
- go to some EF get togethers to meet friends
- English classes at Migros Klubschule or KV have lots of very nice single women (just pretend you don't speak English well )
- Come to Brunnen on Feb. 25 to meet a lot of local Swiss women
- Go to local fests
- go to local bars
- lots of single women who mountain bike nowadays
- lots of single women ride trains
- get involved in a hobby here... you never know
- Enjoy Switzerland even if you don't have a partner
- If you like yourself, the world will like you too.
