Midwife charge

I don't post very often on here, though I'm hoping for some advice. I was due to give birth on the 31st December but my baby is very cozy still (almost 10 days late) and seems to be taking forever to introduce him/herself!

Anyway, as my baby was due around the Christmas period, I had to look for a midwife that would be available to help out around that time, and it was really difficult to find anyone that was free!

I eventually found two, one that lived a fair enough distance away from me, and her English isn't that great, and another that lives around the corner and speaks much better English. I found the one that lived around the corner AFTER I had asked the other lady to be my midwife. I might add, that when I was speaking to this lady, our conversation was 'awkward' because I don't speak that much German, and she doesn't speak that much English - and so I seem to have 'agreed' to use her, without actually saying 'I want you to be my midwife'.

Obviously it makes more sense to have the lady who lives around the corner (and speaks better English), and I wrote a very nice email to the other midwife explaining that I had found someone that lived closer to me and that I was very sorry for messing her about. I have just received an email back from her saying that this is against Swiss law, and that she will be sending me an invoice!

Is this true? I didn't sign anything, I just 'sort of' agreed on the phone, and I've not even met her... Do I have to pay something for her 'reserving time' for me??

Thank you in advance!!

Re: Midwife charge

A verbal agreement is still a contract!

Here is a thread on housing but related to verbal agreements:

The same would happen if you made an appointment with a dentist or a hairdresser, but I can understand your frustration. Main thing is that all goes OK with the imminent arrival - if I were you though, I'd really want to meet the midwife asap. Tell us how you get on - thinking of you.

Re: Midwife charge

OK, thanks for your help. I will just put it down to experience and hope that the charge isn't too high - as it's such an expensive time of year anyway!!

Thanks again.

Oh enjoy it while your little one is still "baking" . It's really nice when they stay in your belly for longer.. They usually sleep and eat better.
My midwife spoke no English and it sucked. Luckily I didn't need her much at home. If you get confused or have any questions please feel free to send me a pm and I'll help you out.

Re: Midwife charge

Thank you! Well, I'm expecting a largeish baby (around 8.5lb!)... looking forward to it arriving now, as I am getting a little fed up. Thanks for the help, I will certainly take this as a large learning curve!

Good luck joski. I thought you'd have gone into labour already after this mornings chat

Shame about the midwife mixup. I'd just pay the other. It's best to have peace of mind and be comfortable with your midwife so the one close to you sounds a better option
