Gotta love Ricardo...

Bidding on brand new, unopened Office 2011 Mac (FR) for my daughter's new Macbook Pro, managed to get it for 81.-.
Great score, I thought, saved myself nearly 20.- (retails for 99.90)
When it arrives, it's actually Office Mac 2011 for Home and Small business, retail value 339.90!!! .
It definitely wasn't listed as such, so the guy must be kicking himself, but there were no complaints from him, so I guess he'll know better next time.

Possibly, but I don't think he is a pro-seller. He stated that he'd bought it by mistake, which is not surprising since it is the French version and he lives in Bassersdorf.

Re: Gotta love Ricardo...

Just recently had our first bad experience on Ricardo. Up to now, fantastic, wonderful, super and above all, friendly and accommodating people. BUT a couple in Solothurn who better be nameless, very craftily took photos of a carpet which did not show a major patch of bleaching/fading in the centre. Upshot when we arrived we made our reservations known but were duty-bound under Ricardo rules to pay for the darned thing, which was, as far as we were concerned, only "entsorgungswert". Backwards and forwards subsequently with Ricardo Kundendienst who back-peddled saying they could not/would not intervene and if the situation justified it, our only recourse was the Friedensrichter. Left a nasty taste and a big hole in our pockets!

Re: Gotta love Ricardo...

I'm tempted to start with Ricardo as well (casual ebayer back home). Did you do your correspondance in German? How to people generally react if you send them english messages (for those who've done it).

I've only bought 3 things off there so far, but I tend to correspond in English (apologising first!) or pidgin German.

Re: Gotta love Ricardo...

I was told by a few Ricardo users that if the product doesn't fit the description you are not obliged to buy it - if a carpet is described as in good condition but has a big stain, you don't have to take it.

Re: Gotta love Ricardo...

It is advisable to correspond in German, thereby alleviating any problems in advance. [However, it doesn't always work! We asked sellers of said carpet in German whether there were any defects at all, and back came the reply "the carpet has had a table on it". They did NOT say it had severe fading/sun-bleaching]. However, as said, this has been the only bad experience and generally speaking, sellers are friendly, polite and helpful. Many do speak adequate English which is often of assistance. You could always put the translation through the English-German system on Google before posing any questions perhaps.

If you show up in person and have the chance to inspect the product, if it is not what the seller stated, no, you do not have a to take it. However, if you show up in person, buy it and don't see a problem until you get home, it is too late. The opportunity to find the problem is when you are on site. Take a photo, and walk out, with the cash in your pocket, not theirs. There is nothing they can do. If they misrepresent the product, this is not okay.

I have had the experience on Ricardo where the seller has already dismantled an item before I picked it up. This is never helpful unless the assembly instructions are there. Handing me a bag of hardware is never fun unless the assembly is really easy and obvious. As a seller, I always make notes and label everything.

Recently I picked up an item I bought on Ricardo and a small piece was missing but this was not obvious at the time. It was an important component, which I had to go and find a replacement for. It was a hassle and I was annoyed. The seller could not have used the item without it. The seller looked for it but could not find it. He was most apologetic and refunded a large portion of what I had paid.

Well there are many ads in French.( as French is one of the 3 languages of Switzerland). I can't read French so all these adds I rule out straight away. Which actually makes it difficult for all Swiss that don't understand French. So English is not a bad choice-you have a fair chance that it will be understood.
I am always careful if I buy an expensive product. Where possible go and have a look at it at first. Or in the question and answers ask what the condition is. If the seller says good and later appears the opposite then one has recourse.

Re: Gotta love Ricardo...

OK, you have to hear this.

Have been selling and buying on ricardo for a while and I love it. No problem at all, some late payments but I was not bothered. One was over month late but it was OK for me, it happens, I know how it is to wait for your paycheck, so no big deal.

7 days ago I put an ad for a HP netbook that I wanted to sell and get some money before my vacation. I put minimum bid at 30% of the value and 50% buy now of the actual value just so I can sell it fast and get some beer money before my vacation.

7 people watching it and few bids at 40% of the value I am happy as it will definitely go.

Today somebody buys it with Buy now and the auction is closed. I see it is somebody who lives near. Great, he will come by and I will have cash.

Guy calls wants to meet we arrange I go. Nice guy, pleasant, sees that it was as described, looking it, opens, checks...first he asks if he can have some warranty from me for at least few days, I'm saying this is not new product and I am not HP, than he says mmmmmm I don't want to buy it as it is made in China. WTF dude, where do you want it to be made, the USA? All the laptops I bought in the US were made in China as well. Do you think that this specific laptop was made in the China and everything else was made where?

Guy is very apologetic, this that...he offers to pay me the 5 SFR for me to put another ad on ricardo. WTF, if you buy something or bid and win you pay, if merchandise is not as described you can ask your money back, and not to buy something and than to check it out and see if you like it. He could have asked me to see it before and it would have not been a problem.

So this guy (I won't enclose his skin color, I don't want to be accused of being racist, I really have no prejudice) ruins my auction, takes away the bidders who really wanted it, I am left without my beer money and he gave me 5 SFR as reimbursement. Him and I not being Swiss, I explained that if he had bought from a Swiss person it wouldn't be possible not to pay after you press BUY NOW! He said he was sorry, I said I was too, let's forget it but I said please don't bid anymore on my auctions. Even if you have questions, don't it's better for me and for you. All the other ricardo users will ask before and won't be hesitating to pay for their won auctions.

Rant over...

The only way that your statement that you lack prejudice would possibly be true is if you had never mentioned it. Seeing as how you you felt compelled to mention it, however....

Re: Gotta love Ricardo...

As already mentioned, we have only had one bad experience on Ricardo - it is not their fault, although when we pointed out to them that we were totally dissatisfied with the seller's description, Ricardo of course didn't want to know. You have the right to "rant" and in many ways this is good so that others know the difficulties you have experienced. However, Ricardo seems to be somewhat better than eBay, which is much larger and with many more things that can go wrong. Just our thoughts and experiences. Otherwise, Ricardo is super and we have bought many lovely things at rock-bottom prices.
PS wonderful weather here on the other side of the lake in F
