Re: living in Muri Bei Bern

Muri is a independent town with 7000 inhabitants and ASFAIK the lowest taxes in the Canton Bern. Therefore renting is rather expensive. It takes about 20 minutes by tram to get to the main station of Bern. Is it dull? Well probably yes, but it's so close to Bern, that it simply doesn' matter.

I live in Muri and enjoy it very much but we are a family with 2 kids. It's perfect for us. If I were single or married with no kids, we would have probably looked somewhere else.

Re: living in Muri Bei Bern

it is a very nice place but very quiet. apart from a shopping "centre" (read coop, pharmacy and tea room and a couple of other shops) there is not a lot going on.

the river and the forest are close by (and really nice). if your flat is near public transport it takes about 15 minutes to go downtown. but it depends where on muri you will be leaving. there is also a nightbus on thursday, friday and saturday, which is rather convenient.

Lots of expats in Muri, if that matters to you. Also Thun is popular.

Like olympe already said, it's nice with children. Very boring for teenager. There's a big Mediamarkt in Muri, that's the good thing.
You're in 12 mins in the city by tram.

This is the official Muri Website. I guess this is helpful.

Re: living in Muri Bei Bern

I live in Kirchenfeld/Elfenau area which is about 5 minutes from Muri bei Bern. From my apartment it is a 5 minute walk to the tram which takes 15 minutes to get into downtown.

The area is very residential (and therefore quiet) but it is very beautiful, the houses are well maintained, there are lots of flowers, and the quality of people is good. 10 min walk to the Dalhoelzli woods and the river. I love living there.

By the way, I see you're moving end of March. I'm leaving my apartment because I'm moving to the UK in March as well and my apartment is available to rent from the 1st of April. Have a look at my post here:
2 Bedrom Apt in Bern if you're interested.

Re: living in Muri Bei Bern

Dear All:

Thank you all so much for your input. I greatly appreciate it.

As for the 2 room apartment, I am looking for 3 or 3.5 apartment, but thank you.

If the flat deal works out then I will nove there, otherwise it's back to zero. I am glad to know that lots of expats live there that is important for me.

As for Thun, what's it like to live there?

Thank you

The apartment in Elfenauweg that I am talking about is a 2 BEDROOM, in other words: a 3.5 room apartment, just exactly what you're looking for.

Check out the ad I posted, I just added pictures.

I've been living in Thun for a fair few years now, and I love it. The lake is beautiful, great for swimming/wakeboarding/sailing in the summer, the old town is pretty, there are some nice bars and restaurants and the people are generally very friendly.
If it's a buzzing city you're after, don't consider living in Thun, but if you want a "villagey" feel, and still be close to other cities (Bern is a 20 minute train ride away), then Thun is the place to be.

Renting is a bit cheaper than in and around Bern too...

Re: living in Muri Bei Bern

Thun is great! I used to go out in Thun a lot. Much more opportunities as in Bern and way cooler people. Not so pig-headed as in Bern.
I almost moved to Thun, but the flats were so expensive.

My friend works in Thun and she says, they have much more rain as Bern.

Since Switzerland has no sea it's great to live near any lakes.
