Re: Moving into Basel--is it worth it?

When I lived in the UK, even on brightly lit streets, after 10pm or so in most towns, I felt I had to be on my guard. In Basel, I've NEVER felt the least bit unsafe.

You will have a better standard of living, you will feel and be safer. Stop your mithering.

What I want to know is: can you sing? If so we'll have you for this year's panto. http://www.baselpanto.org/

I've seen more enthousiasm in a grade 6 student in afterclass detention. Are you sure nobody puts a gun on your head?

Cheer up.

As I said, it is a personal opinion based on what I like to do, my objectifs, my interests and what I want from the place I live in.

You have to see if it fits with you, YOU as a person having some free time outside of work. What do you like to do on your free time? Going in the nature? Doing Shopping? Partying? Meeting a lot of new people? Want to meet someone? Want to go hiking? Skiing?

You have to think about those things and make your decision on that. because if you are not a outside sports kind of girl, if you love fashion, shopping, going around town in bars, restos and meet a lot of new people, I'll say you'll find the place pretty boring. (Again my personal opinion based on my personal life experience)

Nil
First, calm down. It's not like you're moving to Mogadishu....

I've lived in Zürich as a student and soon-to-be pharma worker, and I think the quote above is pretty spot on. You're already at the point where the marginal increases in happiness from more money might decrease and you should definitely be thinking of non-financial aspects more. In any case, it sounds like you're doing well money-wise at either end, and if you're careful here you should be able to save plenty. If you like the spontaneity, diversity and "buzz" of a big city, you might not like Basel. How much will you miss your friends and family? It can also be a bit tricky to meet new people here so you need to factor that in....

As a "better to regret what we have done rather than what we have not" kinda guy I would suggest you try it and see how it goes. You can always fly back on weekends or go home wiser and more worldly after a year if it doesn't work out.

Re: Moving into Basel--is it worth it?

having been a london girl myself i can't understand your trepidation but Basel is great and there are plenty of people like you here - we have a good time and london is only 1 hour away so you can go 'home' often and enjoy the good life here and there...

you won't regret it and you can come out on the pub crawl one night soon..

Re: Moving into Basel--is it worth it?

If you don't want the job here, don't come. Stop trying to get random people to convince you; it won't work.

If you do want to move to Basel then leave the negativity behind. Everyone has told you that financially you have nothing to worry about and yet you seem blind to the facts and keep moaning about the money and your savings.

It seems you have your own conflicts inside your head. Work them out, decide what you want to do, then if the answer is "take job, move to Basel" welcome to EF, introduce yourself and ask some questions. If the answer is "turn down job, stay in London" then enjoy the wonderful cosmopolitan city of London and sort out your career.

Re: Moving into Basel--is it worth it?

after reading all the replies, i cannot help but wondering whether the OP is not pulling our legs. i mean, basel more dangerous that london?! really!?

i do appreciate that moving to another country can freak you out (happened to me) but you also have to appreciate people taking the time to reply to you with facts and numbers. you did not, however take the same time to explain where did you get all the horror stories of basel being unsafe and what is quality of life for you.

best of luck whatever you do, but please do not waste people's time and resources if you are not willing to listen at all or to engage in a constructive discussion.

Serious or not, she definitely got the nicest answers for that kind of thread ever. The archives are full with far more nasty answers for the same question (is 120K enough to live and alike...)

i agree, she got really nice answers, that is why it is a pity she doesn't listen.

i pity the person who will be the next one to make a "is 150K enough" thread...

Re: Moving into Basel--is it worth it?

To give you a bit of perspective.

When I was 25, I moved to Istanbul with 2 luggages, no money and no idea what was going to happened. I had a flight ticket from the school I was going to work for and that's it. No relocation, no organisation more than having someone to pick me up at the airport and bringing me to the hotel where I could stay for 2 weeks. (longer then that was going to be from my pocket).

I didn't speak the language, I didn't know anything about the place beside the pink glasses view made by touristics books. I had nobody to help me to find an appartment and settle down. I had to sell everything I had back home to have a backup money cushion in case of no appartment found in the allocated time and enough money to buy a bed and a fridge to sleep and store my food in the horrible appartment I found (That I painted myself and made it pretty cute).

You got an easy package and a good salary in a country you'll be able to speak english.

You'll be fine! Because I went throw it with such a strong personality that I didn't know I had.

And you know what? It was the best experience of my entire life! I got an husband from it and a growing family.

Stop being scared, something may be waiting for you here!

Re: Moving into Basel--is it worth it?

How can anyone consider London safe for anything? 20 kids get stabbed on the streets each year and that's just stabbed... Last year 15 school kids stabbed one other at the middle of rush hour at Victoria station.

Honestly, I don't think you're going to be less safe in Basel.

Re: Moving into Basel--is it worth it?

I agree totally with the comments made on the postings from Village Idiot and the other posters who have already listed the positives to Basel. (I have previously lived in London)

Basel is safer, and on your salary, you will be able to rent a nicer central apartment that anywhere within an hours train commute of London.

I don't think twice about walking or cycling home in Basel after midnight - I used to think very carefully about my options and route before ever doing that in London. The late night trams are more plentiful and safer than late London buses. I have never taken a taxi here, because night trams and walking is so straightforward .

You don't need to speak German to live here ( other EFers, please don't jump down my throat here about the the ethics of whether we should speak German - we have that on another thread)

There are plenty of opportunities for meeting people outside work - curry nights, ski trips, theatre outings, sports clubs, bars, book clubs etc etc)

No, Basel does not have all the nightclubs that London has , but really - how many can one go to in a week anyway?

Excellent public transport system, easy to get across town and throughout the country. Frequent train connections for other countries, a great little airport ( esp for trips to the UK) ......

Tell us what your specific outside of work interests are, and between us, we may be able to comment on opportunities for those , specifically.

I have the feeling that you are just having an anxiety attack over the moving issue. Don't worry about it - just take the jump! You will be fine here.

(and really, that late night shower business is NOt a deciding factor. )

Re: Moving into Basel--is it worth it?

I have been here 2 years now and although I was always a "country" boy I never really liked cities BUT Basel has grown on me and I am amazed by the amount of events that go on here. There is so much culture here and things to do. For a wee city it certainly is busy too.

Compared with London, you are MUCH safer here. Don't let the expense issues get you either. If you are savvy, you find out very quickly where the places are to shop and eat. Saying that though gastronomy here is very good or if you prefer eat in Germany or France as they also have some very good eating places.

Basel is a very sociable place and in no time you will make friends and be going to all sorts of parties and do's.

Have you ever been to the Alps before? Stunning, not the same as Scotland mind you but stunning in their own way

Do yourself a favour, your young, got a career ahead of you. get out of London and experience life a little, You won't regret it here.

Whatever you decide it's your choice but make it soon

Good luck

Re: Moving into Basel--is it worth it?

Fantastic people of the EF,

First of all, I sincerely apologise to all of you who felt I have not taken the nice replies seriously or that I have not been too coherent or data driven.
Please do accept my apologies as I am indeed going through a very high emotional stress related to the new job, the move to a new country (and a new language), the relationship, the "usual" life fears, and so on.

I have read every single reply at least two or three times and it has built up my confidence that the place will not be an issue. I look forward to meeting you (all!) at some point.

Many thanks for the time you offered me these days and warmest regards!

You know that it is normal to feel what you feel. The first time I moved out my country (the story of Istanbul) I had one month to take the decision and get rid of my things and jump into the plane. I didn't sleep much, lost a lot of weight on stress and I was contantly thinking how stupid was the decision I made to do it. I was living days and night in fears.

But you can decide to fight it and despite the fear, to keep going and take the chances, the risks and live the experience! Worst case will be you not liking it and going back home. But believe me, you will never regret it. You'll be proud that you tried and that is much better than any regrets of not having done something!

Begin to pack your stuff!

Re: Moving into Basel--is it worth it?

I've tended to take some leaps in my life...
Stayed (at 18) with some family friends in Hawaii to graduate with my class.
Stayed behind in Chicago (at 22, with my brother) when the rest of our family moved south.
Took a demotion / pay cut to move to Florida to be nearer my family.
Moved to Savannah (Georgia, US) to take a ("huge") promotion where the only person I knew was my boss and the culture, in some ways, is much more different than one may think.
Moved here to be with my husband, after only having been able to actually spend time in person for a grand total of about a year even though we'd known each other for 5+ yrs at that point. Not knowing the language, not having an (easily transferable) job due to language issues.

I won't say that every moment for each of those leaps have been stellar but through each experience I have learned how much I can do on my own, how strong I can be when I put my mind to it.

The move to Savannah in some ways was the most freeing, even though it also, in some ways, was the most stressful. Although the basic language was the same, there were many many differences... a lot of the folks there had had family in the area for generations (much like here), as big as the city is, it really has a small town feel (much like here), as "backward" as some may see that city to be, there is A LOT of culture (just like here).

Also, much like here, the folks who are like-minded and / or with similar backgrounds tended to somehow find each other and socialize together. Within the first few months there I had made some friends who were more-or-less around my age, who had somewhat similar background, who had some similar interests... As soon as I gave myself the chance here, the same thing happened too.

I know the decision to make the leap is hard, good luck with your decision. I also know though that such opportunities are really valuable in more ways than you may think before taking them... although I stayed in Savannah for slightly less than a year (went "home" to help my mother when my father left her), I have absolutely no regrets about the experience.

Again, good luck with the decision... hope to see you about if you come to Basel.

Re: Moving into Basel--is it worth it?

My advice might be different to some other people, but it's my own opinion....

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you're happy where you are, why would you want to move? It's always a risk that you won't be as happy in Basel as you are in London.

I'm sorry for not being very reassuring, but that's how I feel.... you seem to have a little voice in your head telling you it isn't a good idea. Listen to your intuition. Don't let anyone else make this decision for you. Think carefully, it's a big step.

I hope it works out either way, good luck! Personally....I wouldn't take such a massive step if I wasn't 100% sure. I've ignored my intuition in the past and I've then regretted it....

I'm editing this to add: if you do move to Switzerland, you have an offer of friendship from me and I'll try my best to help you with anything All the best.

Re: Moving into Basel--is it worth it?

Basel is perfectly safe for most of the year, except for a brief period in late winter/early spring when the cliques emerge from their underground dwellings. They may be recognised by the shrill cry they emit as they roam the streets looking for victims - when you hear this sound, you should go indoors immediately and stay there until they pass.

Apart from these strange and grotesque creatures, however, Basel is a lovely place.

I'd move there in an instant if I didn't live near a much better city.
