As it happens, she hadn't intended to use actual grasshoppers at all, although we kids (my brother, a cousin or two along with another auntie who is a year younger than I) - I was probably about 7 at the time - thought it was a great idea.

If you find some easily attainable crawfish though, I'd like to know... I'd sure love to have a Louisiana style Crawfish Boil sometime.

oh no...this picture looks exactly like what I had before, except that I used to grill them....maybe I should boil them as well next time.....hmm I have to find them right now!!

And if you're ever in the mood for Surstroemming, I've got two can's in the fridge that I'll probably never open!

Surstroemming...hahaha...thanks Tom, but I think you should keep it in your fridge in case of burglary. I'm sure it will bring the biggest nightmare to those who break into your house....

Re: where to find crayfish?

I find crayfish in Aligro... but there are only a few in CH, so either you come to visit French Switzerland, or you travel to Sweden...

When I lived in Sweden, every May I could find crayfish sold in supermarket. It's still far from spring but I start to miss the taste of crayfish. Maybe it's possible to find crayfish somewhere in Switzerland or it would be nice to have a small weekend trip in late spring to go to the nature look for crayfish in some lake, pond.....Does anyone have experience with catching crayfish in Switzerland? Perhaps I need a fishing license for it? waiting for your answer.
As others already said - you usually get the pre-boiled frozen ones at IKEA in the summer - don't know exactly when they start selling them, but I've seen them by the end of July and beginning of August when the "crayfish season" in Sweden starts.

I have found some "fluss krebs" (river crabs - known in the US as "crayfish," "crawfish," or "crawdads" depending upon where one is from) at Aldi. They were precooked and shelled and sold in small packages (maybe 200g at the most) in an apparently assorted box with salad shrimp.

They're not so great if you're planning a crawfish boil or something like that (I remember racing crawfish before they went into the pot when I moved to Southeast Texas) but they're decent in a "crawfish alfredo" sauce.
That Louisiana Crawfish boil looks really yummie!!

I love crayfish parties - eventhough I'm not very big on crayfish (it is good and I always want to eat some every year, but after a few I turn to shrimps instead...) We also used to race them before they entered the pot.... which was great fun, until all us kids realized that all of them also our champions were destined for the boiling pot... quite traumatic...

Or if you decide to open them, please pre-warn so that one can leave the country first

In 1996 it was a huge controversy when fishing authorities wanted to dump poison on a pond (Schübelweiher, Küsnacht ) infested with american red swamp crawfish...

Re: where to find crayfish?

I was in IKEA and saw promotions about crayfish and thought of this thread..

In IKEA Spreitenbach on 24 August in the evening there is a "Krebsfest" - crayfish party, for IKEA Family members.

See brochure. Tickets from the IKEA Sweden Shop.

Also crayfish are available to buy in the shop from 20th July to 31 August.
1Kg frozen crayfish with dill SFr 16.95 SFr 14.95(family).

Re: where to find crayfish?

Migros (Altstetten) sell small packs of fresh shelled Crayfish. Have done for a year or so.
Granted, they're not the most flavoursome, but they're ok in a salad or sandwich.

Re: where to find crayfish?

If you can live with just the tail meat, already shelled, you can find them at MM and MMM Migros, as well as Aldi, Globus, and Jelmoli (and likely Manor Food).

I've bought them at Aldi many times. Not the very best quality (they have some citric acid or something as a preservative) but still enjoyable.

I think I saw whole crayfish at the New Asian Market near Kalkbreite in Zurich — their HQ is in Basel: http://www.newasiamarket.ch/

You made me miss home! Miss crayfish!!!!! so yummy.... I tried pre-cooked IKEA ones. They are enjoyable but not even close to the delicious smell and taste of the freshly cooked crayfish at home with a glass of good beer!

I went to Migros (Altsteten) yesterday just to get the crayfish (FYI - i live quite far from Alstetten). Not only they do not sell fresh crayfish, they told me that they haven't had it on offer for the last 15 years or so....

Are you sure you didn't misunderstand each other when talking to a Migros guy. Crayfish is "Flusskrebs" and I am sure that they sell small packs - not at the fish counter, but in the fridge with the packaged fish... I believe even Aldi has packs like that, but they are not exactly good. The frozen ones at IKEA are much more worth it.

Yes, they sell them most of the time in my local Migros. They're called écrivisses in French. But Leafy is right, they're not the most tasty, but they're ok.

That's odd, because I bought some in there last week.
