| | Shops open on Sunday? (Geneva)
Hi,
Do you know if there are ANY shops open on a Sunday in Geneva?
I only know a couple of "ethnic" minimarkets in Paquis (one on Rue des Bois, and one R.Laussane and Rotschild). Anything else?

Don't know about Geneva specifically, but in many cities the stores at the main railway station are open on Sunday.

Newer Petrol stations (Coop, Migrol) with an attached mini-market are becoming more widespread.

I went for a walk this morning and nothing, the entire city shuts down on Sundays. Even the stores at Cornavin, at least the ones underground.

I remember once visiting Luxembourg on a Sunday that all the stores were open. I asked in a Springfield shop how come, and they told me that it was the day of the week when they sold the most, everyone went shopping on Sundays (except the shop employees, who had 2 days off during the week)

Do you mean Luxembourg the country? That must have been during the holidays. That entire country shuts down on Sundays by law...except the one Match Marche in the countryside. I lived there recently and Sundays were so sad and quiet.

Perhaps it was some years ago, because last time I was there (in Luxembourg capital, I mean) it was on december of 2007, I think. I was visiting the city on a Sunday and all the shops were open and crowded. I think it was mainly in one of the streets going to the train station.

If you want food shopping, the Migros at the airport is probably the best on Sunday. However, be warned that everyone else knows this as well, and it is totally crazy shopping experience.

We voted recently about the extension of the opening of the shops and about opening them 4 sundays a year.
Of course, it was refused....to protect the working people.....

That's when they are allowed to be open for holiday shopping...like here too during Christmas. No, you went at the right time. It was really a blessing living in Luxembourg first because Switzerland believe it or not is far more lively than Lux. I can't complain here! |

There are lots of little shops and tabacs open all over town on a Sunday. My local one on the rue des Charmilles is open 7 - 24h 365 days of the year. He has basics - milk, bread, eggs (once saw someone buying one egg!!) cat food, wine, beer etc.
There is a Coop garage that is open on the rue de Lyon until 10 pm - they have the usual Coop stuff, except no alcohol.
Otherwise the Train Station or Airport, as mentioned before. Most petrol stations have a convenience store attached, and as you said - Paquis has lots of places.
The store at the Train Station is on the ground level - where the ticket machines are.

Pickwick Pub is open on Christmas day. As for restaurants, it will be a bit of hit or miss. Most restaurants at hotels will surely be open though.

Hey people,
I am interested in buying something which is not bread on Sunday... I am working on other days, don't have time to go shopping.
