Medical insurance and preparing to have children

Ladies of the Forum,

I am preparing for my move to Switzerland and am assessing the options for medical insurance.

I would like to know:
1. what is the cost of seeing a gynecologist before trying to get pregnant and to make the necessary tests, etc. Would the insurance typically cover this costs?
2. if there are complications which would need infertility treatment (visits, medication, etc.) how much would those cost? Would the insurance typically cover these costs?
3. during pregnancy does the insurance typically cover the check-ups and the delivery?

Many thanks for your input.

This booklet explains what is compulsory for insurance companies to cover for pregnancy:

For anything else you need to ask the insurance companies exactly what they cover under each of their types of cover.

Re: Medical insurance and preparing to have children

in short, insurance will cover it. Supplementary only kicks in after one year of you being here and not being pregnant.

Birth and a limited number of checkups are covered. You will also find that many hospitals don't have more than 2 to a room in their facilities....

For infertility treatments, I think the cover is limited. Treatments will not be covered but some element of physical checkups may.

Re: Medical insurance and preparing to have children

What the others said, and just to add that when we first moved here we got pregnant immediately (unintentionally) before we'd even got my insurance sorted out. Wasn't a problem at all, our insurance backdated itself to cover all the early pregnancy-related stuff.

We have friends who went through infertility treatment here and their insurance would cover two to four rounds of artificial insemination (they didn't want IVF so I don't know what the deal is with that) and at least two bouts of hormones. Hopefully you won't need to know any of that. Also for what it's worth my experience of giving birth in Switz, even as a foreigner who at the time spoke extremely little German, was excellent in terms of service and support both before, during and after.
