We always pack straight away and so do many others. However, there are often a few who will wait and then start packing, but this is certainly the minority. My pet peeve is the design of the conveyer belts at the Coop; I always try to get the front conveyer belt, the back one has a tendency to squash everything together at the end of the conveyer belt...

There was this on conveyer back home that had a wedge style width reducer right before the scanner. I always set up my tower-of-groceries so that wedge would knock the tower into the cashier. The look on their face as the tower slowly toppled in their direction, and frantic actions to remedy the tumbling disaster was always priceless.
Sigh, I was ever so bored back then
