Cough rage

Sitting quietly on the tram today, and there was this guy in front of me who's obviously got a cold. Coughed every few minutes, but did it decently, covering his mouth each time. The lady sitting in front of him didn't like this - I think she felt he was coughing into her hair or something, because she kept adjusting it. At one point she turned her head and coughed at him (without covering her mouth). He seemed a bit taken aback by this (I don't think he'd noticed her antics with the hair) and said something like "strange behaviour", and got back to his book.

When she got of the tram, she waved her hair, as though brushing off his phlegm, right in his face. Rather than grab her by the shoulders and sneeze into her face, he did the Swiss thing. Looked at her, and shook his head. Then got back to his book.

Her behaviour seemed quite bizarre. Are there any cultures/nationalities where coughing in public, even covering your mouth in the approved manner, is frowned upon? Maybe they don't get colds there or something. Or do all mildly unwell people malinger in bed until they're fit to be seen in public?

Hey ho - part of the daily Basel tram entertainment. Better than the accordian players for sure.

Re: Cough rage

I have got a bad cough at the moment and I do get stared at on the tram even though I always cover my mouth and try to cough discreetly....I too have wondered if people go into hibernation when they are unwell. This behaviour is quite bizarre.

Re: Cough rage

I get the impression that with even a slight cough my Swiss peers believe I should be in bed at home...even if it is just a smokers cough and not T.B.

Could she see that he was covering his mouth? Because I'd be pissed if I thought someone was coughing on me. Especially seeing as though, even with your mouth covered, you still get a bit of wind...

Coughing into crook of arm, as recommended.

Coughing and farting - now that is anti-social.

If someone is coughing on you, then of course you might get a bit pissed off. But I'd just move, rather than get into a coughing fight.

Good because the majority of the population here keep coughing in their hand, and that annoyed me BIG time!

Well into the pregnancy, believe me, I am very very anti-social

Re: Cough rage

There's definitely an attitude of some people that you shouldn't be out on the streets "infecting" everyone when you have a cold. We've even had the disgusted face from people on the tram when our daughter coughs and sneezes (at around a year old trying to convince her to do it in the crook of her arm isn't very easy). If they think that's the grossest thing she's capable of they are miles off!

If I took the day off and didn't leave the house every time I had a sneeze or cough in the last year there would be serious repercussions at work.

I'm so glad you mentioned that! My son is 2 and I've taught him to cough in the crook of his arm, or chicken wing as he likes to demonstrate. But my in-laws think that is disgusting and tell him to use his hand!

Re: Cough rage

for health reasons I always try to find a long haired woman* to sit behind and then cough into her hair - I find it keeps germs from being on my hands and / or arms.

Re: Cough rage

One of the positive side-effects of the swine flu scare, is that people seem to be more aware of the hygiene aspects when they've got a cold.

Re: Cough rage

Coughing in your elbow is definitely correct. Hands are a total no go.

Hand-coughing is a real Swiss thing. But during last year's swine flu the Bundesamt für Gesundheit (BAG) promoted the elbow, which is definitely more hygienic.

Re: Cough rage

I cant believe there is a correct way to cough......people have been coughing for many years ....is life not complicated enough without having to deal with the technique of coughing! I will take note that my hand is now considered unsuitable and will now do it into my elbow? or underarm? I cant wait to try this out in approx 30 mins when I shall be on the tram....i will let you know later if there is any reaction.

Re: Cough rage

Cough into your elbow? How is one meant to cough into ones elbow? Are we supposed to master the finer arts of being a contortionist before we get a cough?
Teachers... are always anti-cough, for some reason, I've never seen more single-minded cough rage.

Ok, I'll explain it to you!

When you cough in your hand, all the germs are going in there. The next item you touch (like a door, an other hand, a cup, etc..) you put your germs on it.

John Smith comes behind you and open the door too, shake your hand and put his hand in his face because his nose is itchy and

BANG!

Someone got your dirty germs and will him too, give it to other people...
