In Zurich the lower the numbers are on your license plate, the more cool you are. For example: cool number plate = ZH 100 123 not cool = ZH 798 123. Maybe it's the same in Jura and she wanted to see if your one of the "cool" ones

Re: Just stumped on what to put here. How about overly overly curious Swiss person??

I would use the opportunity to teach her some more English... such as

Good question! One possible, albeit rude answer would be .. "That's none of your freaking business". A polite response would be.. "Why do you need to know"? A less charitable response would be .. "Get out of my house, you FREAK!"

Did you want to practise more such conversations..??

I think you might be a little oversensitive, she might just want to recognize your car and you, for example, in the street. Or maybe, she just asked without thinking what she was talking about. That does happen when we talk.

Personally, I am wondering if she secretly keeps a notebook with all the villagers license plates numbers hidden under her mattress. Just weird...Too weird.
You never know in these small villages..!

Please let us know, I am curious too now!

Where abouts in Jura are you?

I hate to spoil the OP's next Christmas, but I think her student will be giving her with a cushion for the car with the number plate embroidered on it...

That explains it. When I bought my car, the salesman mentioned I was lucky to get a low number. I thought it was a bit weird at the time but didn't ask why.

Re: Just stumped on what to put here. How about overly overly curious Swiss person??

I worked for a while in Cyprus and the project manager I worked with liked it so much that he moved his wife there at the end of the project.

Last time I visited him he'd moved out of the expat enclave into the sticks a bit and told me about settling in.

One night he got talking to one of the typical rural Cypriots in the pub and at some point explained where he lived and the guy said "Ah yes, you have the..." and reeled off the details (including reg plates) of his car, his 4x4 and his motorbike.

My friend wasn't intimidated or worried by it, but I bet after 7 or 8 pints of Keo he was pretty shocked.

Hi Pumpkin, I don't believe this concerns you as a person (or family), I'm guessing that she's being protective.

We used to have a traditional Swiss-German family who lived beside us when I was in Suisse Romande. They were kind and caring. The lady of the house was very careful in regards to looking out for the neighbourhood. She knew everyone's car and car plates. If a strange car came down our road or lingered around too long, she'd write down the plate number. It was just her way of watching out for people.
