Just stumped on what to put here. How about overly overly curious Swiss person????

I have a woman that I give conversational English courses to once a week. Yesterday, she asked me with pen in hand hovering over her notebook what my car's licenses plate number was. We just bought the car a few weeks ago after living in Switzerland for going on four years without a car.

WTF???

I said I don't know. We just bought the car. She was surprised since she knows hers and ran it off to me. BUT the big thing is WHY I didn't ask her right away WHY she wanted to RECORD this info and why she was asking in the first place. I was so shocked that she asked this. I have driven in the States for over 10 years and NO ONE asked me such a question!

I have a valid Swiss drivers license and our car is OURS. So, why this question?? Am I , after almost four years in Switzerland, missing something???

Personally, I am wondering if she secretly keeps a notebook with all the villagers license plates numbers hidden under her mattress. Just weird...Too weird.

I am a stay at home mother with the most boring life EVER living in this village and I cannot for the life of me figure out WHY she asked me that. I am going to ask her the next time I see her now that the shock has worn off.

Or at least to put your mind at rest! Some people are really strange and it does take some getting used to over here. Do you think you will ever find out the answer?

Perhaps she wants to look up the car details on the online database to see what kind of car you bought. Perhaps she's concerned, if it's an expensive car, that she's paying you too much?

I don't know. I, honestly, think that even for a Swiss that is over the top.

I should be charging her at least 10 to 20 Chf more per hour and I only charge for an hour even if it goes a little longer (sometimes a half hour). I am a nice person and that is just how I was raised to be.

She already asked me the make of the car and I told her. I think I have told her too much and really can't understand her issue.

Before you react in any way, check that you didn't park it on her personal spot (it may not be marked, but still be "hers")

Otherwise, very strange indeed...

Is she coming to your home for such lessons ? Are your parking spots identified with the license plate numbers ? Maybe she just wants to park in your spot while your car is away (while hubby is using it) ?
Or are you coming to her place by car and she needs to register your car somewhere in order for you not be towed/fined ?

Why don't you just ask her next time you see her? Chances are there's a totally innocuous boring explanation such as, you are parking in someone's parking spot when you go to hers for lessons and she has been called out on it by her concierge.

Maybe she wanted to check your address.
You can look up the registration of person using the licence plate number... but she could have just as well used www.weisseseiten.ch or asked you :-)

well, it could be as simple as her just collecting them as a hobby to something sinister like her wanting to learn all about you so that she can kill you and take over your identity.

I doubt it but hmm....seems as good an answer as I can come up with.

BTW, she lives right across the street from me. She walks to my home. My car is in a garage. We have no parking spots to worry about. I just really hope it is something innocent otherwise she will need to find a new conversational English teacher. I will be driving my car with no worries.

Re: Just stumped on what to put here. How about overly overly curious Swiss person??

How developed is her English. Was she possibly just trying out a new sequence of words = either in the question, or in waiting to hear a sequence of numbers and checking to see if she had heard correctly. (havin spent last night in a german class with the "what is your phone number" lesson for learning to hear nyumbers correctly.

Please do let us all know , when you do find out.

No, for anyone that is over the top, or maybe she had a new Chf10k pen or watch she was discretely trying to get you to notice by exposing both!! Us silly foreigners miss these things!!

You are right about the "even if she is Swiss" thing I wrote. I should not think like that. I do without even thinking....Which most likely is the explanation.

I am really wondering if maybe it is because of wanting to write down the letters and numbers correctly but given her level in English I am sure it isn't that. I will ask her the next time I see her. I hope to pass on a really funny experience to you all here rather than...Well, you know.

If I hear about you on the news I will feel bad for telling you to calm down !

You know I was on the phone the day of my birthday to my doctor and she said to me "happy birthday !" and I was super excited so I said thanks yea, you're so cute realising its my birthday I love swiss people they are so observant... and she said no madam "what is your birth date?"

Happens to all of us

She may have asked you What brand is your lawnmower?
