As far as your "Z" and "Y" confusion goes, just practice.

I can switch between UK and Swiss (German) layout with ease now - and touch type with both.

French keyboards are definitely the worst.

what's fun is when someone has attached a swiss keyboard to the computer and then installed the software to use an american keyboard.

Don't forget most operating systems allow for multiple keyboard configurations, usually via an icon in the taskbar or equivalent... you only need to know one layout that way!

We had that situation in my first job here. Our PCs had Swiss German keyboards but all the servers had US keyboards, and were set up for those. But there were a couple of Swiss German keyboards in the server rooms. If you got one of those plugged into a system expecting a US layout, the easy way was to avoid looking at the keyboard and touch type. Having a "z" or a "y" in passwords was best avoided!
