Re: Swiss women are the slimmest in Europe and British women are....

Well with the high food prices and the more practical approach to travel i.e walking cant say I'm surprised.
But then again why do the larger ladies always sit next to me on the tram, bus and plane?
Seriously since moving here both myself and my partner have lost weight. She's over the moon as it means no more weight watchers classes.

This seems to have really ruffled your feathers. Are you over weight?
Ruffled my feathers? Nah, I'm fat... my lifestyle here is quite a bit healthier than it used to be and I've never had problems with "fat people" things like cholesterol, blood pressure and other things like that.

The problem I have isn't with being fat but with the constant media nit-picking on everything that is outside of the "acceptable ideal". Too skinny, too fat, ugly, poor, doesn't dress right, etc etc... LOTS of those things are simply things which make us individuals.

So, I suppose you'd apply the same to anti-smoking campaigns in the media?

Are you suggesting people are more likely to give up smoking without any information and that information that suggests that smoking will drastically decrease your life expectancy and harm your unborn children will actually cause people to smoke more?

If you follow the threads on smoking on platforms, gun control and dealing with poverty, yes, most seem to think that making laws will help more than telling people the truth.
To compare over-eating with smoking is pretty ridiculous, after all,
(1) you HAVE to eat, no one ever says you HAVE to smoke in the first place and
(2) me choosing to eat a hamburger or two while sitting next to you doesn't "automatically" put calories in your body but "you" smoking next to me does directly affect my health.

With regards to point #2 though, while I do believe the argument could be made that having fat friends could tend to "make" one gain weight (lots of social activities revolving around consumption rather than exercise), the decision is a lot more conscious to actually over consume as opposed to "deciding" whether or not to breathe.

It was the campaigns for the cessation of smoking that I was alluding to and not the affect of smoking on others. That's a separate issue.

You're suggesting that media campaigns regarding obesity do, to you at least, have the opposite affect of the intended one of making you eat less.

I was merely wondering whether you thought there was any difference with this and the actual result of anti-smoking cessation campaigns compared with the intended result.

Actually it is a stereotype.

If you look at scientific studies on the impact of weight on health issues you will find a very mixed bag. It's really easy to point a finger at fat people, but hard, scientific evidence is mixed. But it's easier to just say fat doesn't equal health and go from there.

But maybe we're talking different factoids or even asteroids here.

Re: Swiss women are the slimmest in Europe and British women are....

I heard of this study on one of the main French radio news this morning and I tried to find an article related to it in English and I have to agree it's not the best one. Weight problem as mentionned by another poster as a direct impact on health and our eating habits are a big factor of it as we all know, like heart problems and diabets. On the radio a nutritionist was invited and gave some explanations... this study is not to point out at fat people but hopefully to stress issues.

Also today, Mac donalds in France is talking about introducing a service at the table like in restaurants. where a server will come and take an order. They know the French market is different. Apparently, the French who even go and eat at a fast food, will take more time than in the US to eat. they will also order a 3 course meal so spend much more money! Anyways, this different eating culture has helped us.

In France Mac donald call is called a restaurant by the company itslef and in the US it's a fast food. Both are apparently very different.

The other thing is that I think we are much more obssessed about our figure in France. I have to pay attention to my weight because I could really go heavy so i go on the scale twice a day!

Re: Swiss women are the slimmest in Europe and British women are....

When I last took the train from Vallorbe to Paris we were waiting at the Gare for a connection and Mr S commented on how small in height that the French are say compared to the Dutch or Germans -a fact I am aware of as my French family are all quite dainty.
We were discussing obesity and I said - count how many overweight people you see. We counted about 7 in the time that we had. One lady was quite large and when she turned to her travelling companion she had a very strong english accent.
I believe this is so as so many of the english do rely on ready made food. All my Swiss/French friends always make a meal from scratch.
Have you looked at the fat content of ready made meals??

I don't think its fair for people with healthy lifestyles to subsidize the unhealthy (or risky) lifestyles of some others.
There should be some kind of insurance premium imposed on smokers, drug abusers, obese and extreme sportswo/men.

Any society/culture that puts so much pressure on women to step on scales TWICE a day seems a bit oppressive. Smacks of social manipulation and oppression of women.

I think it is also due to the idea of multi course meal. While normally people have a piece of fruit or a bit of a salad, it was only UK that I remember people went throught the pain of sittin through the usual main meal, salad and a sweet desert. In the US, it was the apetizer, that elsewhere would actually be just a main meal, adn then the rest of it, with the super sweet oversize late.A snack was a giant bagel with ton of other things served with it. Sweet drinks, meal counting food that is presented just as a "little something", "something tiny for the sweet tooth" or whatever other corny phrase, that actually means 600cal heavy duty thing. Even the veggie or fruit smoothies are actually meal worthy, but people don't realize that since it's the health hype thing.

People are thin, but I am not sure how healthy it really means. To hang with people who obsess about body weight gets annoying, as much as it is to hang with some hypochondriacs. There is nothing nicer than to have a decent bite, and do some physical activity with chill people. So far I have seen extreme amounts of very thin people, and I admire the self control (or not willing to spend so much cach on food). But we have no idea if they are healthy. Especially the chicks surviving on cigs and red bulls. What irks me that the standard meal portion for a 4yr old translates into 3 table spoons of pasta, in our local creche. That's just being stingy.

Is it really society? Or chicks who buy into this...
