Do you have sidewalk rage?

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...share_facebook

According to this article in the Wall Street Journal: "if friends or family comment on your anger, or you think you need to tell someone how to walk—however politely—you may have a problem"

Signs include:
  • Having denigrating thoughts about other pedestrians
  • Walking by a slower moving pedestrian and cutting back too soon (feels hostile or rude)
  • Feeling competitive with other pedestrians
  • Acting in a hostile manner (staring, presenting a mean face, moving faster or closer than expected)
  • Feeling stress and impatience when walking in a crowded area (crosswalk, staircase, mall, store, airport, street, beach, park, etc.)
  • Walking much faster than the rest of the people
  • Not yielding when it's the polite thing to do
  • Walking on the left of a crowded passageway where most pedestrians walk on the right
  • Muttering at other pedestrians
  • Bumping into others
  • Not apologizing when expected (after bumping by accident or coming very close in attempting to pass)
  • Making insulting gestures
  • Hogging or blocking the passageway, acting uncaring or unaware
  • Expressing pedestrian rage against a driver (like insulting or throwing something)
  • Feeling enraged at other pedestrians and enjoying thoughts of violence
Familiar?

Re: Do you have sidewalk rage?

Yep, especially with regards to the scumbags who hang about Fribourg station right in front of the doors, sitting on the steps etc. Many's a time I've given a strong knee to the back of some low-life sitting on the steps, who leaves barely enough room for someone to pass when a train has just pulled up.

Ah but dont you want to know why?

Ragers' thoughts tend to be overly negative, over-generalized and blown out of proportion, leaving them fuming about how they can't stand the situation, how late they are going to be, and how this always comes up, Dr. Deffenbacher says. In contrast, someone blissfully free of sidewalk rage may still be frustrated, but thinks more accepting thoughts such as, "this is the way life is sometimes" or, "I wish that slow person wasn't in front of me," he says.

Someone hand me a taser....!

Re: Do you have sidewalk rage?

I'm angry that you used sidewalk instead of pavement.

Normally I'm fine, except on busy shopping days, when crowds make me irritated, and I'll grumble and mutter as above. I get annoyed if I can't walk at my normal pace, it's other people who are walking too slow, meandering and stopping dead for no reason.

I rarely bump into people, but being british, if I do, I'll always apologise, even if it's not my fault.

I get the same feelings in crowded pubs I don't like, but then it's usualy because everyone else is pushing past.

Re: Do you have sidewalk rage?

The first thing I notice when I'm back home, is I can walk through great crowds with efficiency and ease with slowing, bumping or re-manouvering.

I still don't know why, but even the slightest crowds here are angering to get through

Yup. All of those except the muttering. I'm saving that for when the senility really kicks in.

Well someone has to not yield otherwise everyone stops. So it may as well be me.

Re: Do you have sidewalk rage?

Having denigrating thoughts about other pedestrians . . almost always . . but not rage.
  • Walking by a slower moving pedestrian and cutting back too soon (feels hostile or rude) . . No . . never do that . . me?
  • Feeling competitive with other pedestrians - No . . .losers
  • Acting in a hostile manner (staring, presenting a mean face, moving faster or closer than expected) - that is just sad
  • Feeling stress and impatience when walking in a crowded area - Yep . .that is me . . stress, yes but not impatience . . that`s what stresses me!
  • Walking much faster than the rest of the people - What!! If I want to go that fast . . I run.
  • Not yielding when it's the polite thing to do - Yeh but when you`ve battled your way down Bahnhof strasse . . yielding all the time . . . you do kind of think . . okay . . no more Mr Nice Guy
  • Walking on the left of a crowded passageway where most pedestrians walk on the right . . .What the ****?
  • Muttering at other pedestrians - Does not work . . you have to stop and shout.
  • Bumping into others - Ah, that old deliberate bumping technique . . that`s got to be STOPPED and there`s only one way to stop it.
  • Not apologizing when expected (after bumping by accident or coming very close in attempting to pass) - Brits are kings of saying sorry . . I mean, sorry but we are aren`t we?
  • Making insulting gestures - Just ignore that.
  • Hogging or blocking the passageway, acting uncaring or unaware - That is a matter of opinion, sometimes you have to hold your ground - just because other losers can`t wait to get to work and sell some more coat hangers . . .why should you?
  • Expressing pedestrian rage against a driver (like insulting or throwing something) - Against a driver YES - this has to be done . . losers.
  • Feeling enraged at other pedestrians and enjoying thoughts of violence - No . . .not good for your own well-being.
A few additions of my own:
  • People with open umbrellas who almost take your face off
  • People with open umbrellas who insist on hogging the covered areas in front of shops . . . I guess, so as not to get their umbrellas wet?
  • People who suddenly stop on the pavement but then just as suddenly start off again, just as you go past them . . it then appears that you are together . . . by the way . . this is a plus, if the `offender` is hot.
  • `Interceptors` who realise that they are on a cross-collision course with you and try to accelerate so as not to have to yield - if I am feeling particulalry mischievous . . . I can send them on a nice parabolic curve . . ha ha.
I guess that makes me a bit of a sidewalk rager . . . well I didn`t get the name Basher for nothing.

When I am in my home city for a visit, I am very familiar with the locations where pedestrians are more likely to pause, gaze at something, and wherever there tends to be busier pedestrian areas...therefore I am more prepared to negotiate my way through or simply accept things that way.
I guess that living in a different city, we are unfamiliar and therefore face the unexpected alot more frequently.

Pet peeve of mine, It seems everyone, no matter how short, can find a umbrella of the correct length for the spikey bits to be exactly the right height to gouge out my eyes.

Re: Do you have sidewalk rage?

Well of course the most annoying is the sleeve tuggers and they really get my goat : If you dont buy a newspaper/flowers/windscreenwash/all of the above then you are indeed a bad person. If somebody tugs my sleeve I will definitely tug theirs!

I thought I was the only one, they always seem to manage to hit me in the face or gouge out my eyes. No one I've ever met has had this problem. Obviously I need to talk to more people my own height

Regarding umbrellas, the ones I hate are the big long ones which are being carried, closed, horizontally. As the hand holding the umbrella moves back and forth, the spike at the end of the umbrella carves an arc behind the evildoer.

I don't understand the thinking behind carrying skis horizontally in crowded areas, such as train stations.
