Why are there Basel symbols in the cobblestones?

I've noticed a number of the Basel symbols stamped in brass on the streets -- on cobblestones, on steps, etc. Anyone know why?

I think they're to mark land boundaries/lots.

Alternatively, it's so when they're thrown at foreigners, such as Zürichers, the imprint on the forehead makes it clear where it's come from.

They are indeed survey marker points: The BaselStadt planning website has more information (google translate as you wish ):

Location fixed points (LFP) The location of fixed points are the starting point of all survey work. This makes them accessible at all times, they are usually applied in the common types:

They are kind gifts from people elsewhere in Switzerland - they are put there to provide a topic of conversation in the otherwise empty, drab, meaningless existence of Baslers

Reminds me of a joke: What is the best thing about Zürich?

Well I am a little late but:
Those round metal Basel signs are as on the website described landmarks to mark where the property ends.
When I grew up, my mum always told me that this is the point until where we have to sweep... like snow in winter or rake up leaves in fall..
i hated them cause it was quite a bit that I had to rake up...
