| | Soon to CH - would CHF6K per month be enough ?
Hello everyone,
I am new to the forum and so far has found it quite informative...blah, blah, blah......
My question is whether or not I can live "comfortably" on a salary of 6000CHF (pre-tax) per month. I am hoping to move into the Schaffhausen area. Would it be possible to save as well.
How much would a one bedroom apt cost?? and I don't mean an apt with just the bedroom.
What is cost of living like in general in the area.
What is a "zimmer"....I've come across the term several times in the forum.
Thanks a lot.

A "Zimmer" is just a room. If you rent a "Zimmer" in a "WG" that will be one room in a shared flat (bathroom, kitchen, etc. will be common areas.)
If you rent a "1-Zimmer Wohnung", that will be a studio apartment. A "2-Zimmer Wohnung" will be one bedroom plus a living/dining room. (Kitchen and bathroom don't count as "rooms" in Zürich/Schaffhausen.)
More info: How are rooms/pieces counted in home adverts?
You can live quite well on 6K/month - it's more than most grad students make and we're not starving. If saving is a priority you'll want to limit your restaurant meals/nights out just a bit, and when you do go out you'll want to try and hang mostly with students, waiters, secretaries, etc. rather than the IT/finance/pharma crowd... you'll have just as much fun and your money will go further.

What a beautiful question! It doesn't get asked often enough, in my opinion.
Welcome to our lovely forum! We hope you will stay and continue to ask questions.
It will be Spring soon; I always imagine trees in blossom and the flowers on my balcony blooming whenever I post on here.

No...really? In my world 6000 CHF brutto is enough for one person. But, really, in WHAT world is'n't 6000 CHF enough for one person? What, do you expect bread to be 100 CHF? Aaaaaaaargh. So, to answer your question: YES, bloody YES, it's enough!!!

Thanks a lot. | | | | | Yes defo I would say u could save a couple of grand a month unless you will be supporting someone else then it may just be a grand or so, totally depending on how flash your apartment is and how many times you go out to dine and get merry...
I earn less and have more savings then I did in UK...

This is always so much fun. Some people think 6K is what the maid should get while others have never seen 6K a month and are surprised to find they are not forced to live in a cardboard box.
With 6K a month you shouldn't even have to limit yourself on restaurants, or even live in a little "Zimmer". In fact, you should even be able to get a flat all on your little lonesome without sharing.
Switzerland is expensive but even if you have less than 6K the chances of being reduced to bread and water are quite slim. I wish I had your problems.

.... but you'll need more than 6K per month for one.
The reason you've seen this on the forum a lot, is because it's the mods preferred form of transport - perks of the job.

Since the debates round with salary questions again and it seems to be the hottest topic at the moment can you peeps advice me on good investment strategy using Swissquote.
