| | handbag stolen in Lausanne
i was in a cafe-bar called l'hydromel in lausanne, near the big pointy brick dome at the edge of lausanne near the library last night from 7-11pm. Just before we left I went to the toilet and as we got our coats on I realised my bag had been stolen. The bar was nice and not overly crowded so the person/s who stole it must've been extremely subtle and swift. I was quite upset as with broken french trying to tell the barman what had happened. They said to go to the police and get a report, however with my house keys, wallet and iphone in there some things are sentimental and irreplaceable. I just need some advice, i have "menage de assurance" with Zurich, what are my next steps? I luckily left my BCV cards out and my partner had them, so extremely lucky there. I just feel violated, just take the money it's a lost but my UK driving/aussie license is a pain/pictures etc. ALso my assura card.
Also i had migro and coop cards, it is possible for them to trace my address from these? ALso doctors prescription do they include addresses on that?? i cannot remember.
with the iphone 4 is it possible to access anything or sell it on? i informed orange but i am heartbroken as it had a mini video of my babyscan at 14 weeks which i won't see again.

File a police report which you will need for your insurance as well.
You should be able to block any calls being made/received via your SIM card by calling your phone provider - do this as soon as possible.
Change the locks on your apartment/house.
Normally the insurance covers the stolen items, but does not cover cash stolen or the costs of ordering new documents (check with your company, though.)
Sometimes stolen bags turn up in rubbish bins in the area...

So sorry to hear about this. Re the prescription , it has your name on it and date of birth but no address, well that's what's on my prescription from a doctor in Zurich.
Best wishes,
Clarah

For the rest (foreign licences), I would suggest checking with your embassy.
For the Migros and Coop cards, I am not sure whether your points can be used; I would contact these companies as well.
Did you have credit and banking cards? If so, these should be blocked immediately as well.

thanks, for the tips. my main concern is being able to access the apartment from using info on the migros/coop cards or the insurance card and medical prescriptions, im terrified of them coming in or trying to as the estate agent is closed until monday morning. the ppl who stole it will know where i work as it had my work i.d also in there. i am really kicking myself, normally i guard my bag very well but it was a small local bar and not too busy.

As a short term measure, in the absence of being able to contact the agent, why don't you get the lock to your apartment changed? If the agents kick up a fuss you could always change it back once you are satisfied that your safety will not be compromised.

If you use the "borne" at the Coop, you can scan your card to get the current number of points that you have on your account BUT you need to enter your security code to get to the page with the address details. So unless you have the code written someplace in the stuff that is gone, they can't get the home address.

On a second point, I would suggest that you do a tour of the immediate area and check the garbage cans and dumpsters. Often the person is only looking for cash and stuff that can be sold. The other stuff (that is easily identified, certain ID etc.) is often dumped within 100 meters of the bar. You have a bit of light left today, so I suggest you get on it with a couple of friends ASAP.

| | Re: handbag stolen in Lausanne Just a reminder: Locks aren't that simple to change in Switzerland. It's quite expensive actually. Unless the insurance is paying for it. It's not like USA where you can just run and get a key made etc...You have to have special permission from the landlord and it can cost you 500chf+. |

thanks. i usually do bring nothing. just the one night i have too much in my wallet due to sorting recent things out such as licenses and going to the pharmacy i forgot to take it out. i spoke to concerige and they said i had to wait to monday to talk to the estate agent. I do have zurich home contents insurance, would i be able to claim the phone and handbag as well as the changing locks? i know, it's one of those complicated locks and also the front door is the same for everyone and it's all in one. front door and the front door to your own apartment. it's a nightmare.
it just sad that these ppl wld take something without any idea the grief or trouble they cause others, i had a look around all the bins and went bin digging but no luck. i called the phone last night immediately when i realised and on the second ring out they then switched the phone off. i am wondering if a stolen iphone 4 is able to be tracked or sold?

The 'local' number you tried may not be 'manned' in the night. I'd always hang on for a least a minute or two to see if anything else happened.
When we lived in Basel we had two phones in different flats on the same number. It I answered and it was really for mother-in-law I would explain that I would put 'mine' back on the hook and I would pop downstairs to inform MiL and she would, in just a minute, pick up the other one. The number of people who hung up on being 'cut off' was unbelievable.
Hope you manage to get everything sorted out. It must be awful not knowing and worrying about the expense and have all the hassle too.

On reading, my understanding was, as soon as the OP realised her bag was gone, she tried to call her iPhone, to see if it was still nearby. After 2 rings, it was switched off.

replacement of most apartment locks will run into thousands. The front door lock will also need changing, potentially. And thus the keys of everyone in the house.
You're insured for this though, report the theft of the keys to your insurance company and renting agency/landlord. It might have to be done at the end of the lease anyway so ensure it's reported now.

its bizzare that the front two doors is the same key for everyone as im sure ppl would lose keys at some point and so they must not bother to change that. i am hoping/fingers crossed that they only need to change the front door and not the whole building and the 30-40 apartments too! i hope zurich insurance is good too, will find out tmrw when i call them.
With iphone4, i cancelled it and gave police my IEM number whatever that is, and wld the robbers be able to access anything personal on the phone? such as dates on the calender? as then that wld be an invitation to come rob us whilst we're waiting for the locks to change!

If it ever went walkabout, I would lose nothing more than a few stored phone numbers, which would be no good to anyone.
With the cost of modern technology and the details of our lives therein contained, we will soon have to contemplate going around with a bag or briefcase chained and handcuffed to our wrists, as it is such an inconvenience and hassle when things go t1ts up.
Hope things sort out, without too much of the aforementioned inconvenience and hassle.

It often happens that thieves after having cleared what they got simply deposit the rest on a seat at a bus-station or similar places, so that the stuff land up at Lost&Found.
