Hi, Everyone!!!

I just want to share what happened to me today. I joined this forum not long ago and I wasn't very active because I don't see much things that happening (for english speaking people) in the region where I live. But the forum is very helpful, I would say. Sometimes, the posts make me smile.

Back in Singapore, I wouldn't meet someone through the internet (either it's for friends, companion, etc). I was skeptical at first but I shared it with my husband and he was kinda cool about it. I feel like doing it but I was scared in a way of who or what kind of person(s) I will meet. He told me that it was a good idea. It is good to meet new people so that I would have friends and I wouldn't be bored too. So, I went with it. I post something on the thread with a title of "looking for friends in fribourg" And I got a response from someone named Millso. I met him today in Cafe XX and I would say I had a good conversation with him. He is such a nice guy and he is cool. I wouldn't mind to do it again (if I made a good impression)

I just want to share this especially to those who are quite unsure or whatever to meet someone. It is not a bad idea. We can always leave anyway if we don't feel like it. But who knows? Maybe just like me, you will have a good afternoon.

Btw, Millso, if you are reading this, THANK YOU for the nice conversation. My husband said that you two can have a beer one weekend while I have my coffee/tea. Otherwise, once we are settled, we will invite you for cheese evening.

I've removed Millso's real name though as he/she may not be happy to have it publicized. A lot of people prefer to keep to usernames in public, and only use real names in private or in real life.

Yes, I hope so too. It's not easy to make friends when you are new in the country.

Btw,MathNut. Thanks for editing (removing his name). I was not so keen to put his name at first but when I looked back at his reply in the thread (looking for friends in fribourg), he put his name on it. So, I just did. I agree with your intention.

Haha, pleasure was all mine GCD. Not everyday that you can have an interesting discussion in english with someone in Switzerland. Learnt a bit about your culture and the differences between how things work in Asia and Europe. Things that I had never even considered before Also thanks for your input on the other matters, always good to have an outsiders point of view.

Would love to do it again sometime and to have your husbands input as he's spent a lot of time in both continents and may have different idea's or opinions to what we had.

Mathnut: Thanks for keeping my anonymity but no need (there are no innocents here... ), I have no problem with people knowing who I am, nothing to hide or otherwise. Besides, using my surname as a username sort of defeats the purpose a bit

I would also like to say that Millso is very nice! Much the same as every single person I've met off of here. In addition to the excellent advice you can get from this forum, you can meet some really brilliant people - this is the best thing about the EF in my opinion.

It was an interesting discussion for me too. Thanks for the helpful ideas on what to do in fribourg. I was happy to have an english conversation aside from my husband. It was nice and I didn't even noticed that we were chatting for hours. Stay as you are and I believe that there are still people out there that will be please to be your friend.

Babies have been born as a consequence of people turning up to EF events in the past and there are a few marriages and certainly many relationships formed. Although EF's not a dating site, it's natural people hit it off - even just as friends - from having the attitude to either arrange an event oneself or make the effort to turn up to a place full of strangers.

Some of my best friends are human.

Excellent post! Yes, some people think it's a bit strange to meet folks off the internet, but it's such a great thing to have here in Switzerland. I would have loved something similar to this in other countries far away where language was a barrier to make friends.
I've been lucky to meet some nice people off this forum, and lucky to meet nice people out and about too! Basically, use the tools you've got. Viva La English Forum...!
