That's why you move to an English-speaking city like Geneva. | | | | | Geneva an English-speaking city ? Up to now at least, Geneva is a French speaking city

And the problem of Geneva is not a lack of interested folks but a lack of space
And developments in Geneva never had and never will have "ripple effects" in all of Switzerland, rather simply no effects at all, as Geneva is not that important in this country

The Article was very pro-london (anti- swiss), Id even go as far as to say it was a warning to any Traders/Financiers in London who were contemplating a move to Geneva/Zurich, Switzerland isnt that bad, actually im quite happy to land at Zurich Flughafen after a visit to London...London compared to Zurich?? ...give me Zurich any day!

| | Re: UK Financiers in Switzerland ..Getting bored... | Quote: | | | | | Contrary to what you think, I have brought up two kids here and found the swiss kids are not that smart. Im a little worried to know if my children are actually challenged at school.... | | | | | Actually, Swiss kids tend to only say they are good at something if they are practically on the national team for it and will not speak up with their opinion easily. To the ignorant bystander, this might make the Swiss look stupid, when in fact they are just "dumb", in the not speaking sense...
I went to English school and was amazed at how little they asked from me. And wondered how dumb (in the no brain sense) you had to be to get into one of the top comprehensive schools and then quit 6-12 months before your final exams because you had accidentally got pregnant. Happened to six (!) girls in my English class...

I just think that, if foreigners are bored in Switzerland (or Geneva), I'll be happy to welcome new people at their places.

They claim to ""find it hard to meet people from outside the world of finance"" apparently not realising that the arrogance of finance people is appalling for non finance people | | | | | How true. I have been appalled at the arrogance of middle-aged guys in suits who really ought to know better on the early-morning and late-afternoon flights between Zurich and London Heathrow or City airports. The violence with which these guys will chuck around other people's stuff in the overhead lockers has led me to points of near air-rage (when they do it to mine). I am sad to say these guys usually turn out to be Brits.
I used to live in London for a few years in the mid-90s before departing overseas and don't go back too often. When I do it seems like the finance guys really are worked into the ground. Went for a beer at a nice enough bar in London City Airport and found myself surrounded by a bunch of miserable drones totally pre-occupied with blackberries, blue-teeth and netbooks whilst sipping cappucinos (cappucini?). Talk about reverse culture-shock!
If this Economist article succeeds in encouraging more of them to remain in the Yuk then all power to them!

It certainly makes me happy that London isn't going to be a ghost town, because we like going back visiting it from time to time.
It makes us appreciate having made the move. | This user would like to thank Custodian for this useful post: | |
