Basel to Zurich Oerlikon Commute everyday

I am starting work tomorrow @ Oerlikon. Would love EFers ideas/ tips / suggestions / complaints on the commute from Basel to Zurich ? Personally I am a little nervous about the travel since I have never commuted this long ever for work. My husband works here in Basel so we are not considering shifting for now. I am equally eager to get introduced to fellow Efers that commute like me everyday from Basel to Zurich and back.Look forward to hear from you all.

Regards

This is a very easy commute, in fact. There is an IR train that runs once an hour directly from Basel to Oerlikon (on its way to the Flughafen). It is normally quite a full train but significantly reduces your travel inconvenience because there are no transfers at Zurich main station or otherwise. It normally runs on time (as do most trains in Switzerland) and should be no problem.

I agree, that's a good train to aim for. As most punters aim for the fast non-stop trains, the IRs tend to be less critical in terms of overcrowding.

I would advise you to get a GA if you're going to do this every day. This gives you the additional freedome to travel elsewhere in your free time. The tram systems / local transport of all the major cities is also included.

If overcrowding is an issue, you could also consider upgrading to the 1st Class GA. 1st class tends to be quieter and more civilised.

Also enquire with your HR dept whether they can contribute towards that. Many companies have schemes to encourage people to use public transport and will contribute financially towards season tickets

Re: Basel to Zurich Oerlikon Commute everyday

My wife made this commute (the opposite way) for a few months, and you should most definitely get a GA if you are doing this every day. She also took the IR train that skips the Zurich HB, which was very convenient but very crowded. Because of that, upgrading to 1st class GA would be very nice, and if you could work out a deal where you work on the train and count that towards your work hours, that would also be ideal. The commute was brutal for her and she grew tired of it rather quickly (4 hours every day, but the residence and workplace required extra trams in Zurich and Basel).

I know a few Zürchers who do it the other way by car. They tend to leave home very early. ( I used to do M25, 100km each way, every day... Basel-Zürich cannot be as horrendous as that.)

I get the sense that ZH -> BS isn't as bad simply because ZH is a bigger hub, more traffic flow and there are several bottleneck tunnels enroute.

BTW: I'm also a hardened veteren of the infamous western stretch of the M25. Lets share war stories sometime

Re: Basel to Zurich Oerlikon Commute everyday

I commute from Basel SBB to Zug every day by train. The First Class GA helps. Basel -> Zurich is easy, it's Zurich -> Zug that's the killer for me.

I know people who make this commute by car, West Ring in the morning, through Luzern bypass in the evening.
