That's not what you said on May 17th 2008, MusicChick.

In this we are in absolute agreement. Of course we shall take the opportunity, as we get to know her better, to share our views of the local Serbs and Bosnians (interestingly enough, she doesn't seem to have a problem with Albanians, and actually speaks a few words of Albanian... I wonder if there's a back story there?), but this will have to wait until the time is right.

What we shall not do, however, unlike some contributors to this forum, is berate her as a moron, or self-pitying, or stupid, for feeling so unhappy about the situation in her home town.

Nobody was ever persuaded to change her opinions by a heavy blunt object. ;)

What a bunch of over-reactive ninnies who convolute the thread with whatever happens to float into their heads.

The simple point is that the poll is missing a 6th choice of "Truly liking, choosing and preferring to live in Switzerland". It's for those who have a positive attitude and healthy mental state about living here. Not having that choice there makes it look as if the whole EF community is made up of miserable self-pitying foreigners who hate the Swiss.

The fact of the matter is that a large portion of EF members do not have such gutter facing attitudes, and some of us love the Swiss and are even Swiss ourselves.

Get it yet?

Hang on Phos, I might have missed this in all your other identical posts to this thread, but ... are you saying the poll is flawed?

Re: Poll: How do you feel about living and working in Switzerland?

Regarding the poll. Impossible to answer for me. Not because it needs some more options as already covered in earlier posts but because my feelings on living and working here fluctuate regularly, just as they did in the UK. Even though I consider myself fairly well acquainted and accepting of a lot of things here now, I doubt I will ever reach the stage where I can say I am 100% completely satisfied with things but then again, where would I achieve such a state...

One thing remains consistent though. That is I do not blame the country, the stifling bureaucracy, the ludicrously high prices, the lack of choice, the mentality, the people or other negatives experienced by many here for my feelings. There's good and bad everywhere - in every country, in every race, in every family - so at the end of the day, what does and would it achieve? Absolutely nothing. Those things remain the same, irrespective of how one views them, so why remain constantly down in the dumps about this, that or the other outside factor that cannot be changed. What can be altered is one's own mental attitude to these things but only if a person choses...

I began by focusing on the positives of being here such as the closeness of nature, the mountains, the lakes, learning another language, getting to meet and know some very nice Swiss people and other expats, the excellent travel system, being able to travel to other European destinations easily given Switzerland's central location and so on.

I have no problem with someone complaining, letting off steam, getting it off their chest - call it what you will - so long as when is all said and done, they at least attempt to do something positive about whatever it is that's getting them so down about life here. I have done it and found the experience absolutely liberating although definitely not easy. That said, however, it's not a one time thing, rather it is something I am constantly working on and doubt there will be an end...

I notice that maintaining one's outlook is something that needs constant personal maintenance here in Switzerland. In my previous life in California, it came naturally without a thought about it. It is like keeping physically fit. I find that one has to manage one's state like one manages one's health. There are times when you crash and you need to pick it up, just like catching a cold or the flu. But it is one's responsibility to pick oneself up.

Mmmm...."satisfaction" is not an option in the poll?

I was bored this morning (well, procrastinating... all those boxes to unpack... :msnsad:), so I came up with a fun quiz.

Who said the following...?

Quote:

I don't think the popularity of this [are the swiss racist?] thread is due to whining foreigners, but more from direct empirical data.
Quote:

Most of the ones [swiss women] I've met are typically unopinionated, aloof, cold and passionless. The only things they seem to care about are themselves. Oh, and of course cats.
Quote:

They [the swiss] seem to enjoy letting others know of their shortcomings, and enjoy evoking some sort of humiliation in others. They seem to generate Schadenfreude from it.
Quote:

Their level of cultural self-awareness seems to have retarded.
Quote:

the Swiss are really showing themselves as a depraved and nefarious people.
Quote:

here in Switzerland, rules are often used to avoid inter-personal cooperation. This has a dumbing effect on the minds of people.
Quote:

the culture at large in Switzerland is cold, aloof, socially clumsy and ungraceful. And sometimes even quite mean. There is just no warmth. Even quite dead at times.
... and my favourite:

Quote:

Clearly, the OP simply doesn't like it here. There is absolutely nothing wrong with not liking this place. This place isn't for everybody. This isn't my favorite place in the world either... No need to bash OP for her venting
Go on! Who do you think it is?

;)

Cmon, everyone can change an opinion...some even within a day or two, depends on...uhm, wait...food, sleep, how much attention they get home, etc. :D

It's good to be reminded that people will always go after inconsistencies, but honestly, go unpack those boxes, we all should do something sunday worthy.

On procrastinating, which is biting me in my buttox, this is cool:

Around 800 BC, Greek poet Hedroid wrote in one of the earliest mentions of procrastination that “a man who puts off work is always at hand-grips with ruin” (Steel, 2007).

Uh, ok, back on topic and I have to dig out that damn school assignment.
