Poll: How do you feel about living and working in Switzerland?

Based on a recent thread, of someone who is feeling a little "disgruntled" at the moment, I though i would post this poll to see where YOU feel you are in your acceptance (or not) of living and working in Switzerand.

This is obviously a subjective poll, however I think we can all agree that whatever stage we are in, is dependant on many factors...

The 5 stages are based on the Kubler-Ross model... Originally targeted towards the 5 stages of grief of having a terminal illness, or the death of a loved one, it feel that it can be applied to many issues we deal with in our daily life. Ms. Ross, ironically was born in Switzerland....
  1. Denial—"I feel fine."; "This can't be happening, not to me."
Denial is usually only a temporary defense for the individual.
  2. Anger—"Why me? It's not fair!"; "How can this happen to me?"; "Who is to blame?
  3. Bargaining- "I'll do anything for a few more years."; "I will give my life savings if..."
  4. Depression—"I'm so sad, why bother with anything?";
  5. Acceptance—"It's going to be okay."; "I can't fight it, I may as well prepare for it and accept it."
Edit: Note that the stages do not necessarily have to flow in the above order...

there's no " I'm fine and feel totally happy, only the weather sucks in winter " option ?

I know we are leaving, I know where we are going but I don't know when.... This drives me insane! Because I can't wait to get out of here....

So I put it into depression one.

Only if you have multiple personalities....

You missed the "I love it here and don't have anything to whine about" option, so I can't vote...

Same here. Maybe this thread should only apply to those who are feeling a little insecure about living here?

I think this best captures the different personalities of EFers:

Fair point... But it appears that there are at least a few folks that fall into that catagory... (and the fact that we cannot edit polls...):msnshock:

Yeah, where is the "I'm happy here and glad we're staying" option.

Your Poll is flawed

the stages are

1. Honey Moon
2. Cultural Shock ( Rejection )
3. Regression
4. Recovery
5. Reverse Cultural Shock

There are issues I'm not totally OK with, but that doesn't mean I'd like to change the country or just accept it as it is. I'm trying to change my point of view and my attitude and progress with my life here. It would be silly of me to want the same things I'd want somewhere else. Different countries offer different things and wanting a glass of anything to become a cheeseburger is just pure stupidity. Besides, it makes no one happy. If the glass is half full I'll take a smaller glass -- that way you'll have a full (and in many cases healthier) one! ;)

Not helpful, and incomprehensibly written.

Sure Switzerland is not perfect, but it's a lot closer to perfect (for me) than anywhere else. Only 2.5 years into my stay so far, but I really don't know why I would want to leave...

Re: Poll: Where stage are you in ... Living in Switzerland

So, according to our Kublers of this thread., we are in mourning? Tissue time.

I dunno, I just live here it could be anywhere: not that low crime*, low unemployment, low taxes... okay, a lot of low stuff, poor me, play any role in it. Hey wait, there are mountain highs here! Woo hoo!

*my apart has been broken into and I have been attacked, I personally do nothing for that image, nor the stats.

Re: Poll: Where stage are you in ... Living in Switzerland

The stages only work for a situation you cannot change by yourself - like a giraffe in quicksand:

Being an expat in Switzerland is not being stuck in quicksand. If you really do feel miserable here, there are plenty of options where you could go on this planet depending on the reasons why you do not like it here. I do not feel depressed nor do I "accept" my situation blindly: I have been here for some years for good reasons, but recently feel pretty bored with the country - so I might just move on. Switzerland and I can stay good friends without loving each other... no hard feelings :D

I was somewhere else. Now I'm here. In the future I don't know where I will be.

I don't do "stages"; I just wait for the next thing to happen.

I totally agree to that. I got great stuff from here and I am thankful for it. It is just not a place for my personnality. Nothing bad about it. I am not having something against the people, more about the culture (not my style), the environment (very boring to me) and the weather (no need to explain here....)

Every countries have their plus and minus. You just need to be happy with them and make sure it match your personality.

Re: Poll: Where stage are you in ... Living in Switzerland

I think I'm in the complete and utter indifference category. Switzerland is a perfectly fine and acceptable place to live, as is the UK, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Scandanavia etc.. If I were coming from the US, the Far East etc.. I would probably have a very different view, but as it is I don't spend too much time navel gazing on what it means to live here, how the Swiss tick etc..

there's no "I'm fine and feel totally happy, and so grateful I live in the Jura in winter, above all the fog by the lakes' option?;)

Begga 17.03.2011 19:53

Re: Poll: How do you feel about living and working in Switzerland?

I've been thinking about it the whole day, which box is my box.

I think Charles Dickens could describe my staying in Switzerland quite well.
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way.
I have my plan B. Ready, steady....not entirely ready to go though.
But few things have to change, and I'm giving it a chance to do so.

If I do end up leaving though, something tells me I will eventually return.

So my box will stay unticked for now.

I am in a terrible situation where I don't like it here but don't like it in London either...or anywhere else. Everywhere now seems foreign and nowhere like home. I'm in a taxi from Heathrow to NW London and looking out the window is the most depressing thing you can ever do. Everything is 1970s concrete with runs of shops with only 30% occupation and broken everything. Having said that you can walk into one of them and get an Indian lunch for 3 and it'll be excellent. What to do, what to do?
