...Or do you just absolutely loathe this whole thing and really just want to be able to go...

As an aside, there as a tv programme on t'other night titled "The secret history of the Eurovision song contest".
I thought to myself, "aye up, could be some dirt here..."... I watched for about 5 minutes before realising that the correct title should have been:
"The secret history of the Eurovision song contest"
I gave it another 5 minutes just to give it a chance, but no, it really was a dull programme about the history of the Eurovision song contest, no drugs, no sex, no violence, no vote rigging, really quite sterile.
I became a fan ever since 2004 when I was first introduced by my Spanish friends. The trend for countries to vote for their neighbors is obvious, and the fact that fans cheer for countries rather than objectively picking a song they like is just strange to me.
Nevertheless, I love it. I took a break for a couple of years, but not by choice, rather because there is no Eurovision in the US. I was so happy with Molitva in 2007 and Fairytale in 2009, though. Lena... ugh... I've hated it since forever.
This year I'm routing for Bosnia. I find something very appealing about a Singer-Songwriter showing quality work.
The Swiss entry by Anna Rossinelli isn't "awful" per se, but I just don't think it can win. But...
To me this video resembles a prescription drug commercial in the states.

Favs to win this year are France by the way. The song, unusually, will be sung in Corsican and it not your typical Eurovision fare.
Nice enough, and sounds well sung (i.e. good voice etc.) but not exactly what I'd call "popular music" - more classical influence than pop, IMO. But then again, I'm no judge...

Here is a kind of ranking from the first link above: the best gains for each country you can choose now. France is clearly favorite (i.e. : you get "only" 2.75$ if you bet 1$ on France winning the finale)
France 2.75
UK 10.00
Ireland 10.00
Azerbaijan 10.00
Estonia 12.00
Germany 13.00
Finland 15.00
Hungary 15.00
Bosnia & Herzegovina 18.00
Sweden 21.00

I am positively surprised. It may not win in the end, but it is much better than what Switzerland usually presents at the song contest

I dunno Finland and Iceland weren't expected to make it to the final, and Turkey was supposed to be a shoe in. I have to believe that the new voting rules are really influencing more than the bookies allowed for.

And that's exactly why it will stand out. Sometimes it pays to go against the orthodoxy.
Plus there is some history of these kind of songs winning
Eimear Quinn won Ireland's last title in 1996 with this:
Norway won in 1995 with this (which is essentially just a piece of classical music)
Seriously??
Can't understand how it got to the finals.
The Swiss song has really grown on me, and I think it has become my favorite. Too bad I can't vote for it... oh well, guess I'm forced to vote for Iceland then!
Oh, come on BLUE have always been a good boy band , I think their song , singing and stage presence is just bloody superb! Go BLUE>>>>>>>>
BLUE to win!!!!!! Jedward second and since Switzerland are singing in English, NULL point from me! Pure cheating !
I do think however that Jedward will get good marks .... its just got that kind of mad , clanging kind of sound that the non European countries of the Eurovision like.
I am a little embarrassed to say that I have been singing Lipsick all this week ......oh deary me whatever next !!!
