Used English books

Greetings all,

Where in Zurich can I get ahold of good English books? I have been to the shop on BHStrasse, but there is no way I am going to pay 30 CHF for a kids book. Ideas? Steve.

Re: Used English books

Welcome to the forum BTW

take a look at the search function, there are a few existing threads where folk (such as swisscath) sell 2nd hand books, there is also an EF free library run by bigblue2. Also, many threads advertising books for sale 2nd hand.

Re: Used English books

There is a fairly big second hand bookshop in Enge, and they have quite a bit in English. I just can't remember the name, but it's located right behind the station.

Re: Used English books

Hi there,

The English Church in Bern also has a book sale about 3-4 times a year where there is a huge selection for about CHF 3.00 each. It is called St Ursulas - they have a website, look under news. Maybe there are some English churches in Zurich who do the same.

Re: Used English books

I have found Amazon.co.uk to be best the source. Don't order more than £25 at a time due to then being forced to pay import duties. As we're not in the EU, you won't have to pay the 20% VAT (sales tax) charge either--which can be used to offset the shipping charges.

The English church in Zurich, St Andrews, also holds a book fair towards the end of May/beginning of June and has a huge book sale as part of their Christmas bazaar at the beginning of November. A Coop/Migros bag full of secondhand paperbacks will set you back CHF 40

I found used books on Amazon for .01 pence, all you do it pay the shipping. The books I have bought have been in ok to excellent condition, certainly readable!

Find the nearest international school and find out when they have a school fete, they very often sell off books etc

Re: Used English books

I have bought many times from Swisscath and she has a great selection for cheap prices, both nre and second hand books.
I never order from amazon (books at least) because they charge you fordelivery, I sporadically use www.bookdepository.co.uk, where delivery is free.
I would contact Swisscath for realz

Angela, are you sure? I've been buying from them for years and I never had to pay for shipping. Are you using amazon.de?

By the way, the second hand bookshop in Enge is called Bücher Keller, I visited this morning to make sure of the name .

I'm sorry to hear you had a disagreement with the staircase . I hope it was worth it, though. For me it always is, I usually find a few. I am going to miss it when I move to the sticks

Re: Used English books

In Kreis 5, near the Don Weber restaurant, there is a used bookshop. They sell some english books and they are quite cheap... about 3 chf.

PS - Sorry, can't remember the name but it is off Heinrichstrasse and across from the new Viadukt shops.

Re: Used English books

'Pile of Books' on Zentralstr. 16, 8003 Zürich is a great bookshop, I went there for the first time last week, they have a second-hand section inside and a few rummage boxes outside as well.

http://www.pileofbooks.ch/en/home/

I found the books were more up to date than in Bücher Keller and more organised.

Also, if you live in or near Wollishofen the 'Fundsachenverkauf' (on Albisstrasse) which is literally at the Morgental stop on the number 7 tram has a few second hand books in English, but their selection is really varied and small, depending on what they happen to have at the time... (worth going to rummage through all the stuff there though - they sell items left on public transport).

BUT the books they do have are really cheap, only a couple of francs for a brand new bestseller.

Are you only looking for childrens books?

However, my mother had, or still has English books to give away: I will let you know, it she still has the books (Wallisellen, near Zurich).

I've just been out to take a look, it's called Enagain and is at 215 Heinrichstrasse (actually down the side of Don Weber - strange name for a Mexican restaurant). Opening hours though are 12.30 - 16.30 Tuesday to Friday. I'll be taking a browse tomorrow afternoon.

The English books on the link BTW are all new but they do have a lot of 2nd hand books, not sure how many are English.
